West Virginia School Board Association Meeting in Charleston

West Virginia School Board Association President Sis Murray from Marion County says “The true constituents are the students” and that is something school board members throughout West Virginia need to keep in mind.

“We are there for all of the students in our counties, not just for a few of them so decisions need to be based on that,“ Murray said.

Those who are part of the organization meet each year to talk about new education legislation and to look for solutions to problems that may be affecting particular counties.

Association Executive Director Howard O’Cull said “school boards are crucial to communities throughout the state.”

“School boards in West Virginia play a very important role,“ he said.

“They bring political accountability to the school system by bringing in elected officials who provide policy guidance, superintendent selection and also monitoring and oversight of the school system in a way that brings accountability to the system and, also, in a way that brings citizen input.“

He said there is a balance, though, school board members must strike.

“Accountability is very difficult because you have constraints at the state level.  You also have competing pressures from the local level as well and school board members have to work within those constraints and also try to get across the ideas from their constituency,“ O’Cull said.

This year is the 60th year for the West Virginia School Board Association.

The Association was created in 1952.
