West Virginia Auctions Unclaimed Contents of Bank Boxes

Watches, coins and other valuables are among the unclaimed property found in expired West Virginia safe deposit boxes and up for auction.
WV State Treasurer John D. Perdue said Thursday the unclaimed treasures are up for bids during an online auction that runs until August 18, 2011.
The property is auctioned in lots, with detailed pictures and images of each item.
The items include 1976 DuPont Belle Plant 50th anniversary bicentennial coins, flatware, pins and jewelry.
West Virginia law allows the treasurer to auction unclaimed property because of limited storage space. Proceeds from an auction are held indefinitely in a trust until a rightful owner is found.
Safe deposit box items are turned over to the treasurer’s office five years after no activity is reported.
