Safe Food Handling Class at Flatwoods
The West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA), in cooperation with West Virginia University and Virginia Tech University, is sponsoring a “hazards analysis critical control point” (HACCP) certification workshop March 12-13, 2012 at the Days Inn Conference Center at Flatwoods. Registration deadline is March 1.
The federal Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA) requires every food production facility to evaluate the hazards that could affect food production and packaging, implement preventive controls, monitor the performance of the controls and maintain records of the monitoring.
Participants will learn how to meet these requirements and how to safely produce any type of food product.
“This is another example of the service the Department provides to West Virginia businesses and West Virginia consumers,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass. “Food producers should take advantage of this training. It’s being offered at a substantial discount compared to what they would pay to get this same certification from a private company.”
Cost for the class is $180.
Funds for this project were provided through the WVDA and the USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.
Checks should be payable to WVDA and mailed to WVDA-Marketing and Development Division, Attn: Teresa Halloran, 1900 Kanawha Blvd. East, Charleston, WV 25305.
To download a class schedule or a registration form, visit www.wvagriculture.org.
For more information, contact WVDA Marketing’s Teresa Halloran at 304.558.2210 or “thalloran@wvda.us”.
Class participants must make their own lodging reservations. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Days Inn Hotel for $80.10 per night, plus tax. Cut-off for the room discount is March 02, 2012. The hotel phone number is 866.700.7284.
