Property Tax Breaks Proposed by West Virginia Lawmakers

West Virginians may get a chance to vote on a pair of proposals aimed at easing their property taxes.
A House committee that reviews proposed constitutional amendments has endorsed two such measures.
One proposal would expand a break on real estate taxes that now mostly benefits low-income seniors.
Each county would elect whether to adopt this addition to the so-called homestead exemption.
A similar measure was debated during last year’s session.
The other proposal would allow an active member of the military to avoid paying taxes on a personal vehicle while they are deployed out-of-state.
Both measures advanced Wednesday to House Finance.
At least two-thirds of the House and Senate must each approve these measures for them to appear on the November 2012 ballot.
