Mountain Lakes Festival Scheduled in Sutton - 07.20.12 – 07.22.12

The fifth annual Mountain Lakes Festival will take place Friday – Sunday, July 20-22, 2012 at the Bee Run Day Use Area at Sutton Lake in Sutton, WV.

There will be no boat parking at Bee Run Day Use Area on Saturday, July 21, 2012. The only available launch ramp that day will be at South Abutment.

Tours of Sutton Dam will be offered from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 22, 2012.

All interested persons over the age of 16 must provide photo ID. No cellphones, cameras or carry bags will be permitted into the dam.

“That Dam Race” 5K- July 21, 2012 – Saturday

The race begins at beautiful Sutton Dam, goes through a trail in the woods, and onto historic Main Street in Sutton.

Be sure to be early, the area will be blocked off to traffic beginning at 7:30 AM!

Entry fee is $15.00 for preregistration and $20 for registration the morning of the race.

Course: The course begins under the backdrop of the magnificent Sutton Dam at the Downstream Recreation Area. Participants then have a strenuous climb up the face of the dam and then across the top of the dam. Then the course takes them on a trip through the woods and back down to the Elk River. Then, to the brick paved streets of historic downtown Sutton past many beautiful, majestic buildings. The finish line is nearly in sight as participants head back up river with the dam in the distance. The race ends back at the Downstream Recreation Area where it began. Come and run/walk one of the toughest and most unique courses in the region!

Directions: Shelters 1, 2 and 3 are located at the Sutton Dam. From, I-79, take Exit 62 Sutton/Gassaway. Turn left on SR 4, approximately 2 miles into Sutton. Turn right at the Stop sign, cross the Elk River, and Turn Left to the Dam.


“Anything That Floats But a Boat” Contest 2012

Think that you can build something that will beat out the competition? Try your hand at this one of a kind competition at the Mountain Lakes Festival!

Challenge your friends, youth group, church group….it’s always a great time for everyone and your group could take home the grand prize of $100.00 cash, and bragging rights too!!!


Country Roads Cook-Off- July 21, 2012 – Saturday

The Country Roads Cook-Off focuses on creating a traditional Appalachian dish with the cook’s own new interpretation. The participants must be amateur cooks and they can enter any dish they feel will win over the judges.

The cook-off begins at 11:00 AM and prizes will be awarded for winning dishes, including a People’s Choice Award. The cooks have from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon to create their dishes and prepare for judging! The Cook-Off is held at Sutton Lake along with the rest of Mountain Lakes Festival.

The sponsors for this event are WVFARM2U Collaborative and Cafe Cimino Country Inn. Compete for up to $300.00 in cash prizes just for cooking your recipe!!


“Elk River Gathering”

Last year this event was sponsored by the Town of Sutton, WV Humanities Council, the Landmark Studio for the Arts, and the USDA Mountain RC&D and held in Braxton County as a way to learn about the prehistoric and early historic periods of the area, explore community roots in the 18th century American Indian and European cultures of the region, and observe life skills that helped these peoples overcome difficulties and thrive along the Elk River!

This year it will be an exciting new part of the Mountain Lakes Festival!!! It will feature re-enactments, special presentations and demonstrations, music and more! Check back for more details on what this event will feature, and times and dates for specific activities!
