Today in 1944, “Operation Overlord” Began

Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E. (R-WV) released the following statement on the anniversary of D-Day:

“Hopefully, every American will pause today to recognize a day that changed the course of World War II, D-Day.  Nearly 200,000 Allied troops landed in France on June 6, 1944, and successfully invaded Normandy. It was the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany. The invasion also called ‘Operation Overlord,’ involved five separate landings by American, British, and Canadian troops and was commanded by American General Dwight D. Eisenhower.”

“We should also note the quote that General Eisenhower gave to his troops before they left for battle.  ‘The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you.’  That’s something by which all government officials should live by.”

“Thank you to all our Veterans, especially on this day.”
