POSITION:     Special Education Teacher- Sand Fork Elementary School - Half-Time


EMPLOYMENT TERM:     2012-2013 School Year


JOB DESCRIPTION:

FOR THE POSITION OF:     TEACHER

REPORTS TO:     School Principal or Principal’s Designee


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:


I. Provides curricula required by the State of West Virginia and the Gilmer County Board of Education.

A. Bases instruction on adopted curricula for the school.

B. Demonstrates accurate and current knowledge in subject field.

C. Develops appropriate lessons to teach instructional objectives.

D. Employs a variety of instructional strategies to augment achievement.

E. Utilizes content scope and sequence in planning.


II. Establishes a classroom climate conducive to learning that is consistent with the state/county school goals.

A. Follows established school discipline procedures which include the WV Student Code of Conduct.

B. Establishes procedures and rules that enhance learning.

C. Encourages students’ attendance.

D. Sets high positive expectations for student performance.

E. Encourages and acknowledges individual students’ accomplishments and appropriate behavior.

F. Treats students in a fair and equitable manner.

G. Accommodates individual learning differences.

H. Creates and maintains an environment that supports learning.

I. Communicates with parents.


III. Implements an instructional management system to maximize student learning that is consistent with state/county/school goals.

A. Prepares and implements lesson plans.

B. Begins lesson or instructional activity with a review of previous materials as appropriate.

C. Has materials, supplies and equipment ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity.

D. Introduces the instructional activity and specifies instructional objectives.

E. Directs and adequately supervises students to be on task quickly at the beginning of each instructional activity.

F. Presents reading, writing, speaking, and listening strategies using concepts and language which students understand.

G. Provides relevant examples and demonstrations to illustrate concepts and skills.

H. Assigns developmentally appropriate tasks.

I. Provides instructional pacing that ensures student understanding.

J. Maximizes student time on task.

K. Makes effective transitions between instructional activities.

L. Summarizes the main point(s) of the instructional strategies.

M. Encourages students to express ideas clearly and accurately.

N. Incorporates higher level thinking skills.

O. Assists students to develop productive work habits and study skills.

P. Provides remediation activities for students.

Q. Designs, delivers, and assesses student learning activities addressing the state adopted instructional goals and objectives.

R. Integrates a variety of technology applications and learning tools to augment student achievement.


IV. Implements a system to gather, store, and monitor data related to student progress that is consistent with state/county/school goals.

A. Follows grading policies and regulations.

B. Maintains accurate and complete student records.

C. Monitors and evaluates student progress.

D. Provides feedback on student work.

E. Monitors student attendance.


V. Communicates with students, parents, educational personnel, and others.
A. Communicates student progress according to established procedures and policies.

B. Communicates regularly and effectively with students, co-workers, parents/guardians, and community and exhibits appropriate interactive skills.

D. Speaks and writes standard English clearly, correctly, and distinctly.

E. Determines and utilizes appropriate community resources.


VI. Demonstrates behavior which reflects established professional responsibilities (i.e. attendance, punctuality, and verbal/nonverbal communication).


VII. Demonstrates competency in the knowledge and implementation of technology standards.


ADDITIONAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides individual and/or group instruction.

2. Participates in SAT meetings for students and recommends education modifications to team.

3. Participates in SAT review for evaluating effectiveness of educational modifications or recommends SAT screening or multi-disciplinary assessment.

4. Observes students in the regular classroom setting.

5. Administers SAT screening tests to students referred through SATs.

6. Prepares and submits to the Office of Special Education signed written reports of SAT test results and recommendations for multidisciplinary assessment.

7. Attends Eligibility Committee Meetings/IEP meetings upon notification of the building principal or special education director.

8. Prepares individual education plans (IEPs) stating goals and objectives for each student receiving services.

9. Reviews and revises the IEPs annually.

10. Maintains valid and up-to-date student records.

11. Informs parents regularly of their children’s progress and seeks their cooperation and support.

12. Sends student progress reports to parents as required.

13. Consults with classroom teachers, parents, and others regarding student progress and suggestions for educational modifications.

14. Attends special education staff meetings.

15. Attends and/or participates in special education in-service/continuing education and other staff development activities.

16. Informs the principal/special education director of concerns or potential problems regarding the program.

17. Submits requisitions for materials to the building principal.

18. Maintains an inventory of materials purchased to serve special students.

19. Maintains professional standards in compliance with the laws, procedures, and policies set forth in federal, state, and county regulations.

20. Performs other duties assigned by the principal and director of special education.


QUALIFICATIONS:

                      West Virginia Certification in Special Education, Multi-Categorical K-6

                      Qualifies or agrees to qualify as a “Highly Qualified Teacher”.

                      Possess the knowledge, skills and ability to successfully carry out responsibilities of the position.


REQUIREMENTS:

Teacher’s Responsibilities: Implements programs of study; Fosters a classroom climate conducive to learning; Utilizes instructional management systems models that increase student learning; Monitors student progress towards mastery of Content Standards and Objectives; Communicates effectively within the educational community and with parents on a regular basis; Meets professional responsibilities and demonstrates competency in the application and use of technology as required.


SALARY:    Based on Professional Salary Scale for Degree and Experience
