West Virginians turned in more than 4,500 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs during the state’s fourth Drug Take-Back Day.

Federal officials said Tuesday that 4,572 pounds of unused or expired drugs were collected last Saturday at more than 100 sites across the state.

During the previous event in October 2011, residents turned in 3,676 pounds of unwanted drugs.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin and Dennis Bolum with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration say ridding homes of unwanted drugs helps authorities fight prescription drug abuse.
