West Virginia Offering Food Stamp Users Replacement Benefits Because of Storm

The Gilmer Free Press

People on public assistance who lost food because of storm-driven power failures this week will be eligible for replacement food stamps.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said Friday it is adjusting the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program to help families who are suffering.

Anyone who lost food in June can apply for replacement benefits through local DHHR offices.

The deadline is Monday, July 09, 2012, but the DHHR says that could be extended with federal government approval.

The storms that tore across West Virginia on June 29, 2012 affected 53 of 55 counties and initially left more than 680,000 people without power.

Since then, temperatures have been in the 90s.

This is all well and good but what about the people who don’t get food stamps and the elderly how do the get their food supplies back?? They lost their foods to.

There are many hundreds of us who lost every bit of food we had including what was purchased on Friday. Much was food we were trying to accumulate in case of an emergency. We are living on our social security only and do not get food stamps. People who do get food stamps get their losses given back in more foodstamps this month. The poor get takn care of and the rich can afford the loss. What about the hard working, shrinking, middle-class and the elderly who live alone with no financial help?
