OddlyEnough™: Phone Apps Help Track Pets’ activity, Nutrition
Dog and cat lovers have a new way to make sure their pets get plenty of exercise and nourishment: phone apps that track how much an animal plays, runs, sleeps and eats.
Whistle, an iPhone app and monitor worn on a dog’s collar that was launched last week, measures an animal’s activity throughout the day. The app can track changes over time and can compare exercise levels with other dogs of the same breed.
Created with input from veterinarians, Whistle Labs’ app aims to help owners detect early medical problems by showing changes in a dog’s activity level and behavior compared to other animals of the same age, breed and weight.
“What (veterinarians) get today are hyperemotional responses, often driven by one or two anecdotes,“ said Ben Jacobs, chief executive of the San Francisco-based company.
“What we found out was that a) vets didn’t really have the information they needed and b) there’s no breed weight and age standards,“ he added in an interview.
The app gathers data from a small circular device attached to a dog’s collar. An accelerometer in the device detects motion, helping to determine if the dog is playing, walking or resting. The rechargeable device is enabled for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
The app also notifies owners of changes in a dog’s behavior, such as if it suddenly starts waking up at night.
“This is the first window you have into the dog’s entire day,“ Jacobs said.
The monitor costs $99.95 and the app is free for iPhones. Whistle Labs said it is also gathering data about dog activity by breed and weight for research use.
Another app called Pintofeed, which is linked to a Wi-Fi-connected feeder and costs $149, allows owners to feed their dogs and cats remotely and set feeding schedules.
“People lead busy lives and don’t really want to have to deal with another task. The feeder is autonomous and manages the feeding for you so you don’t have to rush home from work,“ said Carlos Herrera, co-founder and president of Pasadena, CA-based Pintofeed.
“The app is meant to be a management and notification device. You’ll get alerts saying your dog skipped a meal, or your batteries are running low, or the food is running low,“ he added.
For owners who want to keep tabs on the location of their dogs and cats, an app call Tagg for iPhone and Android provides the information.
The GPS-enabled tracker attaches to the collar of a pet and tracks the animal’s location on a map. Users receive alerts when the pet ventures outside a particular range and they can also view activity levels.
Tagg costs $99.95 and has a subscription fee of $7.95 per month.
West Virginia Rabies Cases Up Slightly So Far in 2013
West Virginia epidemiologists have seen a small increase in the percentage of animals with rabies so far this year.
According to data from the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health, about 10% of the more than 140 animals that were tested in January through March, tested positive.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports that the animals that tested positive included eight raccoons, four skunks, a cat and a cow. Most cases were in eastern counties.
During the same period last year, about 6% tested positive.
Epidemiologist Shannon McBee says while the numbers are slightly higher than last year, they are “nothing out of the ordinary.“
Officials say total number of animals that tested positive for rabies in 2012 was 71, down from 138 in 2011.

Well. She was puttin’ in time - - most likely - - on the clock - - last week with Moodispaw and the assessor, while they were doing the rabies shot deal around the county. Guess she must still be employed by the 3 Commissioners then?

we know about that there was a coon dog running in and out off traffic a few months ago and we called sheriff department four or five times and also seen dog catcher at a store and told her about it plus called her four or five times and it still took them two or three weeks to come and get it. But some one called and reported that we weren’t feeding the dogs and the next day they came and took them to done away with them.

Just like an excrement shoveler it is a disgustingly morbid job, I certainly would not want to do it. Be thankful you have someone willing to.

If a dog catcher even came withing a few feet of my well trained well bred German Shepherd, I would give the command to attack just for basic principle.
Stay away from us, we are Americans.

Troy Elementary School’s First Graders Experience Eggs Hatching
On March 06, 2013, Mrs. Barbara Miller brought 42 eggs and an incubator to the Troy Elementary School’s First Grade.
Students chose 3 eggs to place in the incubator; data was collected during the next 21 days while students waited for the eggs to hatch.
Following are the comments from the first grade students at the conclusion of the project:
• The eggs have recently hatched.
• The eggs are white. The eggs are really small.
• We wrote our initials on three eggs and it took twenty-one days for the eggs to hatch.
• The chicks grew some parts while they were in the egg.
• When they hatched they were wet. The chicks were moved into the brood box.
• Chicks like to sleep. They like to eat and drink.
• The chicks are getting bigger.
• They like to peep and climb.
• Chicks can be yellow, gold, brown or black.
• The chicks are well. We like chicks.
The students really enjoyed this project and we would like to thank the Miller family for allowing us to experience “spring life” in our classroom.
The fifteen chicks that hatched were given some of the following names:
• Squeaker
• Climber
• Tiny
• Peep
• Goldy
• Speedy
• Princess.
The chicks are continuing to grow as they reside at the Anderson Farm.

Egg prices are per dozen including shipping and handling. If you need more than one dozen of the same breed, your eggs may need to be shipped on different days to ensure freshness.
Hatching eggs are gathered daily, kept between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and turned once a day prior to shipment. Some breeds have a limit of 6 eggs due to not enough breeders. These can be combined with another breed to make a full dozen.
Due to circumstances beyond our control during incubation, the only guarantee on hatching eggs is that they will be fresh.
Your order may be placed by printing off the order form and mailing it with your check or money order to the above address.
You may also call to place an order. Orders will be shipped as soon as eggs are available and after we receive your payment.
