Pets are also vulnerable to heat related stress and should be checked on to make sure plenty of water and shade are available to them.

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions :

•  An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur.

•  The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely.

•  Drink plenty of fluids.

•  Stay in an air-conditioned room.

•  Stay out of the sun.

•  Check in on relatives and neighbors.

•  Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.

•  When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

•  Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

•  Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat Stroke is an emergency - call   9 1 1.

G-LtE™: Rebuttal to Charleston Gazette

image

The article in today’s issue of Charleston Gazette contributes to more mystery associated with the State’s sudden and unexpected seizure of Gilmer County schools.

Because the article pertained to Dr. Simmons what is the relevancy of information about GLENVILLE STATE COLLEGE?

Was there anything in the vacancy announcement to document that the new superintendent would execute any responsibilities which would affect the College or that GLENVILLE STATE COLLEGE officials would have roles in the selection process?

No!

The decision for hiring Dr. Simmons was the responsibility of our elected officials who used a democratic process for their decision.

Word has circulated that at least one high level official from GLENVILLE STATE COLLEGE made a call to Charleston to contribute to OEPA’s rushing to Glenville to trigger the unexpected seizure.

If GLENVILLE STATE COLLEGE’s involvement is true, does it not suggest tampering with County business?

Also, does it not suggest that the ugly head of politics dominated?

Accordingly, there are three key questions related to what happened to Dr. Simmons.

•  Was he the most qualified candidate who applied for the vacant position?

•  Was he discriminated against because of his age?

•  Was political intervention by GLENVILLE STATE COLLEGE officials and others principal reasons for the seizure and its impact on Dr. Simmons?

More information will be forthcoming.

Fortunately, truth has a stubborn way of prevailing, particular in this information age of computer literacy.

GROGG’S CELEBRATE 50TH ANNVERISARY

The children of Bill and Donna (Bush) Grogg are pleased to announce that on June 10, 2011 they will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.  They were united in marriage on June 10, 1961 at Mt. Zion in Calhoun County by the Rev. Glendon McKee.

Bill and Donna are the parents of three children, Louie Grogg of Newberne, Curtis Grogg of Glenville and Clarissa Grogg Ferrell of Glenville.  They have five grandchildren, Emilee Grogg Nichols; Olivia Ferrell; Cody Grogg; Cory Grogg and Dayton Grogg; and two great-grandsons, Wyatt Nichols and Wattson Nichols.

Bill is retired from Teamsters after 24 years of service.  He then went to work for and retired from Equitable Gas.  Bill now works at Foodland in Glenville running the greenhouse.  He is also a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge.  Donna is a homemaker and enjoys working in the produce department at Glenville Foodland.  Bill and Donna enjoy spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandsons as well as being outdoors working in their garden and camping.

In celebration of this special milestone, Bill and Donna were treated to a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee in May, 2011 with their children, grandchildren, great-grandsons and Donna’s Twin Brother, Don Bush and his wife, Karen.

G-InMyOpinion™: We MUST Make a GOOD Investment

image

Planning for the future can come in many different forms - investing money, prioritizing needs and even setting a strategy for the unexpected.

If you could choose to make an investment to better your future, you should.

In contrast if there are better alternative choices you should not.

If the choice is managed well now and is vital you should.

And if the choice is currently mis-managed with waste, corruption, and illegal practices you should not.

The levies come at a cost to taxpayers. Keep in mind again, however, that this is an investment in all of our futures.

You should ask will the returns on these investments benefit the county for many years to come?

On Tuesday, November 2nd Gilmer Countians have the choice to make an investment for all of Gilmer County with the vital levies and proposed school levy.

The taxpayers’ investment will be divided in the following categories:

Levies with NO INCREASE in current taxes:
■  Gilmer County Senior Citizens
■  Gilmer County Health Department
■  Gilmer County Public Library
■  Gilmer County Extension Service

Levy with AN INCREASE in current taxes:
■  Gilmer County Schools’ construction of two new schools

Using the above criteria Gilmer Countians should vote YES for:
  Gilmer County Senior Citizens
  Gilmer County Health Department
  Gilmer County Public Library
  Gilmer County Extension Service

And vote NO for:
X  Gilmer County Schools construction of two new schools
