North Bend State Park Offers Introduction to Mountain Biking
Mountain biking is an outdoor pursuit that anyone can master who rides a bicycle.“ And like when you first learned to ride a bike, for some it takes a little push to get started,” said Ken Zebo, activities coordinator at North Bend State Park in Ritchie County, WV. The park is offering a series of workshops this spring and summer to help cyclists get comfortable with mountain biking.
The workshops will take place over the weekends of May 04-05, June 08-09, July 06-07, and August 03-04, 2013.
Instructor is Kim Coram and associates will cover evaluating your current bicycle, selecting appropriate gear and trails, when to use your brakes, and when to change gears. There is a minimal fee of $30 with some proceeds used for trail work at North Bend. Each workshop offers the four courses. “It isn’t mandatory to attend all courses but for an overall immersion into mountain biking it is recommended,” Zebo said.
Each weekend includes an introduction to mountain biking skills, mountain biking on a single-track trail, and trail building. Brief descriptions of each component are:

New Hatfield McCoy Geo Trail Launched
History buffs and adventure seekers now have a new opportunity to explore the story behind the Hatfield and McCoy feud with the recent launch of The Hatfield McCoy Geo Trail. Thanks to the continued surge in interest generated by the History Channel miniseries, geocachers and those who are just plain curious can retrace the footsteps of these famous mountain families with the popular outdoor activity of geocaching following the new Hatfield McCoy Geo Trail.
Geocaching is a modern-day version of treasure hunting, with nearly 2,000,000 caches placed all over the world. On September 01, 2012 the Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Tour Pike County offices hosted 518 travelers from 18 states across the country who attended the kick-off event that became MEGA in the geocaching world.
The trail is a collaborative effort between Williamson’s Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce member Wendy H. Baisden (whbaisden) and Pikeville’s Tour Pike County member Kelly Moore (SpongeBob CachePants). The Hatfield McCoy GeoTrail offers a new destination for geo travelers from across the country and around the world. The Hatfield McCoy GeoTrail includes 15 caches, placed in historic locations relating to the families and their conflicts. Participants use hand-held GPS units or their smart phones to seek the location of hidden objects. These caches can be found in Mingo and Logan counties in West Virginia and in Kentucky’s Pike County.
Baisden and Moore are avid geocachers. Each was named GeoCacher of the month for August and September respectively by GroundSpeak Headquarters. They designed, placed and maintain the caches. In addition, a collectible coin is offered to those who travel to the area and obtain a copy of the passport needed to confirm each find. Visitors must carry the passport to each of the locations and stamp it with a specific stamp found in each of the geocache locations. The beautiful coin depicts the Tug River and the images of the patriarchs of the Hatfield & McCoy Families, Devil Anse and Randall. “The coin is our gift to the caching community,” said Baisden. It is also an honor for us to be able to personally place each coin into the hands of the visitors.“
“Wendy and I worked together to purchase the coins because we felt it was our way of giving back to the geocaching community,” said Kelly. “It also adds to the excitement that visitors feel when coming to the area to geocache.“ Plans are already in the works to offer a Labor Day weekend event in 2013 of MEGA stature to continue to showcase the areas rich history. Details for the coming event will be posted as they are available on the Hatfield McCoy GeoTrail website.
The Geo Trail is a great way to experience an intriguing chapter in the history of Southern West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky.

New Park Planned For West Virginia Off-Road Trail System
The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System is working toward construction of a park for Jeep- and Humvee-type users south of Charleston.
Hatfield-McCoy Regional Recreation Authority Executive Director Jeffrey Lusk says the $200,000 project will be funded by the West Virginia Recreational Trails Program.
Lusk says the project is currently under environmental review. Once complete, a trailhead will be selected and construction will begin.
Lusk says the park will be located near U.S. Route 119 along the Lincoln-Kanawha county border. It’s targeted for an audience other than typical Hatfield-McCoy trail usersThe Hatfield-McCoy system has more than 600 miles of trails and attracts more than 30,000 visitors annually.
Governor Tomblin Proclaims May Motorcycle Safety Month
Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, joined by the Division of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Joe Miller, the Governor’s Highway Safety Program Director Bob Tipton and motorcyclists from across the state, as he proclaimed May 2012 as Motorcycle Safety Month.
“As the temperature warms, motorcyclists from across the country come to West Virginia to cruise our roadways, to take in the views of our stunning hills and valleys,” Governor Tomblin said. “When traveling other motorists tend to have difficulty seeing motorcyclists nearby. This year, I encourage all drivers to share the road and look twice for a motorcyclist this month and throughout the riding season.”
Gilmer County: ATV Accident Sends a Man to Hospital
A Gilmer County man was seriously hurt after his ATV flipped over on top of him Monday morning, November 21, 2011.
According to Gilmer County Sheriff Deputies Danny Luzader was driving up a hill with a passenger when he apparently crashed.
Luzader was taken to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
His passenger was not hurt.
The accident happened on Jones Cabin Run in Tanner, WV.
Sheriff Deputies say Luzader and his passenger were not wearing helmets.
The Gilmer County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
More than 2,000 Expected This Weekend to Celebrate Hatfield-McCoy Trail
The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System celebrates its 11th anniversary this weekend with the annual Trailfest event in Gilbert.
“We are one of the largest participant ATV events in the country,“ said Hatfield-McCoy Executive Director Jeff Lusk. “We don’t know of any other event where there are actually 2,000 plus ATV riders, not spectators, but actual riders participating in the event.“
In addition to the various events which include riding, stunt events, and live musical acts there is the annual ATV Parade through Gilbert which features more than a thousand ATVS in a line that stretches for over two miles.
The event is in celebration of a system that is unique to West Virginia. Although other states try to create their own ATV trail system based on the West Virginia model, nobody has been able to match the size.
“I think that’s probably the best flattery a person can get when folks are trying to replicate you,“ said Lusk. “We are unique in this country in that we are on 1.1 Million acres of private property with almost 400 private landowners who are coal, timber, gas, and individuals who are allowing their land to be used for this type of recreation.“
The system includes more than 600 miles of maintained and managed trails for ATV riding.
The system continues to experience tremendous growth and will this year open its newest trail system in Mercer County and plans are in the works for more trails in Wayne, Lincoln, and Kanawha Counties.
The Hatfield-McCoy Trials were created with an act of the legislature to help diversify the economy and create a tourist draw to southern West Virginia. Lusk says the response has been tremendous.
Landowners are willing to open their property to escape liability and have the land patrolled regularly.
Riders are coming to the region from all over the United States.
Lusk said last year 21 states were represented at the Trailfest event.
He adds 44-entrepreneurs have created businesses based on trail riders. The biggest need now, according to Lusk, is more investment in lodging properties.
“We’re getting calls all the time from around the country from people who want to come to ride the trail, but need a place to stay,“ he said.

WV Governor: Motorcycle Safety is Important in the Mountain State
West Virginia had a long and grueling winter this past season. Many of our citizens spent time digging out from record snowfall that blanketed our highways and neighborhoods. With that behind us, thousands of our citizens will now take to clearer roads, not only in cars and trucks, but also on motorcycles.
Recently, I was pleased to join a group of motorcycle enthusiasts and officials from the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles to proclaim April as Motorcycle Awareness Month.
Since the weather has warmed up, this is a great time to encourage motor vehicle operators to be cautious and aware of bikers, especially during their seasonal return to West Virginia roads and highways.
All of our motorcyclists have safety courses which they must complete in order to travel our highways and byways, and these safety procedures are very important to ensuring a safe riding experience. It is important that all motorists stay alert, use common sense and following driving laws. Our lives depend on it.
The West Virginia Motorcycle Safety Program offers motorcycle rider courses developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and taught by certified, professional instructors in seven locations across the state.
Currently there are at least 55,000 registered bikes in our state. In 2009, approximately 2,000 people completed the safety program’s basic and experienced rider courses, and there has been more than a 40% increase in ridership since 2004.
Safety is the upmost importance while biking, and as a fellow motorcycle enthusiast, I always practice standard safety procedures while riding. As I approach an intersection, I flash my headlamps from low beam to high beam. This is just one extra personal safety practice that I do in order to alert drivers. In addition to following the common safety procedures of riding motorcycles, all riders must do their part to develop personal safety practices to prevent an accident.
Motorcycle tours have been a fast-growing segment of our tourism economy and I believe that it is a great way to showcase the Mountain State to the people across the nation.
We have a bounty of natural beauty and adventure to offer here in West Virginia and enhancing our motorcycle riding industry is another way people can experience the richness of our great state.
I want to thank all of the hardworking people that coordinate the West Virginia Motorcycle Safety Program and the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles for their diligence to inform and educate motorcycle riders and all motor vehicle operators.
Working together, we will continue to make biking as safe as possible in West Virginia. As they say, live to ride and ride to live!
