GSC Selects New Pioneer Mascot for 2012-2013

Niekoli ‘Nicco’ Mills, a sophomore from New Cumberland (Hancock County), West Virginia has been chosen as the Glenville State College Pioneer Mascot for the 2012-2013 school year.

He was selected after completing the Pioneer Mascot application process which includes an essay, references, and an interview with the selection committee.

“I have always had a lot of school spirit at Oak Glen High School and now here at GSC, so I thought that I would make a great Pioneer. I am going to do everything I can to motivate the students and fans at Pioneer athletic contests and other GSC events,“ said Mills

Mills is majoring in criminal justice at GSC and hopes to pursue a career investigating sexual based crimes. He is well acquainted with Pioneer athletics. Mills throws the discus, hammer, and shot put as a member of the GSC Track and Field team.

As the GSC Pioneer, Mills’ duties will include attending GSC football and basketball games, tournaments, and other school events. The Pioneer is charged with working with GSC students, faculty, and staff to positively promote and support the college. The official uniform of the GSC Pioneer mascot is a set of buckskins, a coonskin hat, and a musket.

“Niekoli Mills will be a wonderful asset to the Glenville State College community as our next GSC Pioneer. Nicco, as most of the students refer to him, is very humble about becoming the Pioneer. He is truly excited for this position and has some wonderful ideas to get school spirit up on campus. His excitement is truly contagious and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for being the Pioneer,“ said Jodi Ocheltree, GSC Director of Student Activities and a member of the Pioneer selection committee.

The new Pioneer will begin his tenure at the GSC Fall Convocation on Friday, August 17, 2012. His first football game as the Pioneer Mascot will be on Thursday, September 06, 2012 when the Pioneers host Fairmont State University at 7:00 PM at Morris Stadium.

“I am going to try to lead by the example of my Pioneer spirit. Hopefully that will help the entire campus and community get excited and involved too,“ added Mills.

Mills is the son of Munch and Dineen Mills of New Cumberland.

WVIAC Men’s Basketball 2012: West Liberty Takes Home Tournament Title

For the second consecutive season, West Liberty won the WVIAC Tournament Championship. The top-seeded Hilltoppers recorded a 93-90 overtime victory over No. 2 Charleston.

In the first half, Tim Hausfeld’s jumper with 13:26 to play gave the Hilltoppers a 17-12 advantage. The designated home team increased the margin to seven with 8:19 to go when Keene Cockburn buried a three-point shot from the wing.

With the score 32-25 in favor of West Liberty, PJ Reyes put in a tip-in to cut the lead to five. At the 5:31 mark, Xavier Humphrey canned a three-point shot to knot the score at 34. Cockburn answered with a runner in the lane only to have Reyes hit a lay-up with 4:30 to go.

The teams traded buckets for the next three minutes. With 1:02 to go before half, Reyes drilled a three-point shot to put the Golden Eagles up 43-41. Alex Falk answered with a lay-up, but UC’s Brandon Ross hit a shot with 26 ticks remaining to give the Golden Eagles a 45-43 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the teams battled back and forth. UC held or shared the lead from the 19:11 mark until 9:57 to play. From that point forward, neither team would lead by more than three in regulation.

With WLU leading 77-75 at the 1:46 mark, Reyes slammed home a dunk. He converted a foul shot for the three-point play and to give UC a 78-77 lead. A tip-in with 28 seconds to play by Marco Richardson gave the Golden Eagles a three-point advantage.

After a timeout by the Hilltoppers, Hausfeld stepped up and buried a huge three to knot the game at 80 with eight seconds to play. Richardson missed a shot at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime.

Eladio Espinosa began the overtime period with a shot in the paint. Hausfeld answered with a 30-foot three-point bucket to give the Hilltoppers an 83-82 lead.

UC pushed the margin to four at 90-86 with 2:00 to play, but Hausfeld canned three consecutive foul shots to pull the victors within one with 1:27 to go. Falk’s lay-up gave WLU a lead for good. Cedric Harris canned two free throws for a 93-90 advantage. Reyes got a shot off that hit the rim but was unable to force a second overtime.

For the game, WLU was led by Alex Falk. He notched 24 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. C.J. Hester netted 18 points while Cedric Harris had 15 points and seven assists. Hausfeld connected for 14 points while registering four assists.

The Golden Eagles were guided by PJ Reyes’ game-high 33 points and 10-rebound effort. Evan Faulkner tallied 12 points while Marco Richardson had nine points, seven rebounds and five assists. Marcus Knott recorded a game-high eight assists. He and Faulkner each had three steals.

The Hilltoppers drained 43.1 percent of their attempts while UC hit 40.8 percent of its shots from the floor. UC connected on 25-of-31 from the charity stripe while WLU made 20-of-23.

The NCAA Selection Show will be at 10:30 PM Sunday night.

WVIAC Women’s Basketball 2012: WV Wesleyan Wins WVIAC Tournament Championship

WV Wesleyan earned its first WVIAC Tournament Championship with a 97-76 victory over No. 3 Glenville State.

The Bobcats (24-6) earn the league’s automatic bid to the Division II NCAA Tournament. It marks the first time in school history that the program has advanced past the conference tournament in postseason play.

WV Wesleyan led virtually the entire game, with the score being tied only once, coming with 17:31 to play in the first half at 9-9.

The Bobcats raced out to an 18-point advantage with 8:30 to play in the first half. Jamie Kaufman’s lay-up gave the designated home team a 38-20 lead, its biggest of the stanza. WVWC maintained a double-digit lead for much of the rest of the half until Jelena Elez buried a three-point shot to cut the deficit to nine. The Bobcats took a 58-49 lead into the break.

In the first half, WVWC canned 20 shots and drained 16-of-18 charity tosses.

In the second period, GSC sliced the lead to five just 4:31 after the break on a lay-up by Elez. With the score at 62-57 in favor of the Bobcats, the No. 1 squad in the tournament went on a 16-2 run to essentially put the game out of reach. The lead grew to 22 on Lydia Bridenbaugh’s three-point shot on the win with 1:45 to play.

For the contest, Bridenbaugh poured in a game-high 31 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Brittany Maxey narrowly missed a double-double with 29 points and nine boards. Kaufman garnered 23 points and 15 rebounds while Daria Abros’kina snared 14 rebounds. Abros’kina had six assists while Danae Hill registered a game-high seven assists. Bridenbaugh had a game-high four steals.

Elez recorded a team-high 19 points in the loss for the Pioneers (23-7). Tenisha Wilson netted 12 points to go along with five assists and six rebounds. Mishae Miles had a huge game with 11 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks. Ginny Petties, Wilson and Danielle Woodmore each accounted for three steals.

For the game, WVWC shot 47.3 percent from the floor while the Pioneers hit 31.6 percent. The Bobcats outrebounded GSC 58-51.

WVIAC Women’s Basketball 2012 Semifinals - Glenville State and WV Wesleyan Advance

#3 Glenville State 96, #2 Concord 94 (2OT)

Glenville State recorded a 96-94 hard fought double-overtime win over #2 Concord to advance to the WVIAC Tournament finals.

Mishae Miles led the victors with a team-best 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Danielle Woodmore notched 19 points, 7 assists and 5 boards.

Tenisha Wilson went for 18 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists while Beth Deren chipped in 15.

Ginny Petties recorded 11 points off the bench while Aesha Peters accounted for 6 points and 8 rebounds.

Kenyell Goodson had just 5 points, but hit the 2 free throws with one second remaining in the second overtime for the winning margin.

Jolysa Brown had a superb game with 28 points and a game-high 22 rebounds.

She also contributed 7 assists and 5 steals to go along with 3 blocks.

Anna Truckley added 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Camisha Alexander and Amanda Smith both netted 14.

Alexander twice hit a game-tying shot, sending the contest into double overtime with the first and knotting the game in the second overtime with seven seconds to play.

Holly Bib tallied 13 points for the game.

The Pioneers will play for the WVIAC Championship tomorrow at 3:00 PM against #1 WV Wesleyan. 

 


#1 WV Wesleyan 74, #4 Shepherd 47

WV Wesleyan advanced to the finals of the WVIAC Tournament with a 74-47 win over #4 Shepherd.

The Bobcats’ Lydia Bridenbaugh poured in a game-high 25 points to go along with four assists in the victory. Jamie Kaufman totaled 18 points and 11 rebounds while Daria Abros’kina filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, 14 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists.

She also blocked two of WVWC’s four shots.

Danae Hill chipped in 7 points and registered 4 assists.

WV Wesleyan pulled down 48 rebounds in the game.

The squad dished out 19 assists and had just 10 turnovers.

The Rams were paced by Katie Biggs’ team-best 9 points.

She also corralled 4 rebounds.

Jimyse Brown and Shelby Fayak each tallied 8 points.

Brown snagged a team-best 6 rebounds.

Emily Daniel had two of Shepherd’s 6 steals. Jenn Prine, Hannah Safren and Priscilla Moseh all had 2 assists.

Gabby Flinchum swatted away 3 of the squad’s 4 blocks in the game.

The Bobcats will play for the WVIAC Championship today at 3:00 PM against #3 Glenville State.

#1 West Liberty 87, #4 WV Wesleyan 77

West Liberty advanced to the WVIAC Championship with an 87-77 victory over #4 WV Wesleyan Friday evening in the conference semifinals.

Cedric Harris led the victors with a team-high 20 points.

He drained eight-of-nine shooting from the floor and was a perfect four-of-four from the charity stripe.
Harris also registered a team-high six assists and a game-high four steals.

Alex Falk recorded 17 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Tim Hausfeld and Chris Morrow each tallied 13 markers while Keene Cockburn came off the bench to account for 12 points and eight rebounds.

Shawn Dyer chipped in 10 points.

The Hilltoppers buried 30-of-57 shots from the floor (52.6%) in the game.

The squad also drilled 19-of-20 foul shots.

The Bobcats were led by Raymont McElroy’s game-best 29 points.

McElroy buried 10 shots from the floor, seven of which came from downtown.

Kelsey Williams accounted for 18 points while Reggie Chambers added 14.

Chambers also garnered a game-high seven assists to go along with his team-best three steals.

Colby Wohlleb added 10 points.

Mike Washington grabbed a team-high eight boards.

WVWC netted nine three-point buckets and posted 21 fast break points.

The game featured six ties and 11 lead changes.

West Liberty will play Charleston in the WVIAC Championship today at 6:00 PM/

 

#2 Charleston 89, #6 Concord 80

The University of Charleston drained 51.6 percent of its shots en route to an 89-80 win over #6 Concord Friday evening to advance to the WVIAC Championship.

The Golden Eagles placed six players in double figures.

Leading the way was Evan Faulkner, who netted 20 points.

Eladio Espinosa accounted for 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Xavier Humphrey, PJ Reyes and Brandon Ross all contributed 12 markers apiece.

Marco Richardson totaled 11 points in the win.

Marcus Knott had just four points but dished out a game-best nine assists.

Reyes also grabbed seven rebounds.

In the opening half, UC sank 19-of-34 attempts (55.9%).

For the game, the Golden Eagles canned nine three-point buckets.

Concord was paced by Javaughn Acree-Manuel’s game-high 29 points.

He also registered a game-high four steals.

Corey Neeley ame off the bench to account for 13 points and four assists while Romel Kemp added 12.

Damien Tunstalle had 11 points off the bench.

Tunstalle and Burnell Granderson each pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

The Mountain Lions canned 20 charity tosses in the game.

For the contest, CU connected on 43.3% of its shots from the floor.

The squad made eight three-point shots.

UC will play West Liberty in the WVIAC Championship today at 6:00 PM.

Governor Tomblin Encourages West Virginians to Support Fight Against Cancer

WVU Coach Bob Huggins in national competition benefiting cancer research

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin today encourages West Virginians to support West Virginia University Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Huggins in the “Inspiration is Contagious” contest to benefit the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center in Morgantown, WV.

“We each know someone who has been affected by cancer. For Coach Huggins’, that person was his beloved mother who passed away from colon cancer,“ said Governor Tomblin. “When a loved one is fighting cancer we often feel helpless. Today, you can help support cancer research by voting for Coach Huggins’ in this national competition.“

ESPN and Infiniti teamed up for the contest where fans can vote for their favorite college coaches and the charities they support. Coach Huggins is in the final four and faces competition from Frank Haith of Missouri, Thad Matta of Ohio State and Dave Rose of Brigham Young University. If Coach Huggins wins, the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment, which aids cancer research and helps West Virginia families fighting cancer, will receive $100,000.

WVIAC Women’s Basketball 2011 Quarterfinals Review

#3 Glenville State 79, #6 Davis & Elkins 46

Glenville State advanced to the semifinals of the WVIAC Tournament with an impressive 79-46 showing against Davis & Elkins, Wednesday afternoon, February 29, 2012.

The Pioneers (22-6) dominated the boards in the contest for a 61-46 advantage, while holding the Senators (14-14) to just 22 percent from the floor in the game.

D&E concluded the contest shooting 5-of-36 from behind the arc in trying to keep pace with Glenville State.

First team all-conference performer Tenisha Wilson paced Glenville State in the victory with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Danielle Woodmore and Jelena Elez rounded out the double-digit scorers for GSC with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

On the afternoon the Pioneers had 11 players register marks in the scorebook.

For Davis & Elkins, All-WVIAC honorable mention selection Jordan Lykes scored 11 points and pulled down 9 rebounds in the defeat.

Amy Turner added 9 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Glenville State advances to the WVIAC Tournament semifinals on Friday at 3:00 PM against Concord.

Raymont McElroy posted a game-high 24 points for the Bobcats in the win.

Glenville State used its high-powered offense to post an 85-56 victory over Alderson-Broaddus in the first round of the WVIAC Tournament.

Ginny Petties came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with a game-high 26 points and a game-best 11 rebounds in just 26 minutes of action.

Beth Deren and Jelena Elez each scored 12 points while Mishae Miles accounted for 11 points and 7 boards.

Aesha Peters pulled down 8 boards.

Danielle Woodmore garnered 9 points and 5 assists in the win.

Amanda Peoples registered a team-high 17 points for the Battlers in the loss.

Brittini Shriver scored 10 points off the bench in just 14 minutes of action.

Erica Brooks and Cayla Rhodes each scored 6.

Natalie Smith dished out 5 assists.

WVIAC Women’s Basketball Awards - 2012

Fairmont State University junior guard Kaitlin Snyder has been named the WVIAC’s Player of the Year, as voted on by the league coaches. Pitt-Johnstown guard Kaitlynn Fratz has been named the conference’s Freshman of the Year while Concord University’s Kenny Osborne has been tabbed the Coach of the Year.

Snyder, who was the 2011 Baisi Award winner, guided the Falcons to a fifth-place finish in the WVIAC regular-season standings. She keyed FSU to a seven-game winning streak down the stretch to propel the squad into fifth. The Falcons concluded the regular season with a 17-9 overall mark, including a 14-8 record against league competition.

Recently named an Academic All-American, Snyder picked up three WVIAC Player of the Week accolades on the year. She finished second in the WVIAC with her 21.8 points per contest. Snyder, a native of Charleston, WV, ranks fourth in steals (2.50) and made three-point baskets (2.46/game) while her 4.31 assists per game are sixth in the WVIAC. She also ranks sixth in three-point percentage (38.1%) and seventh in the league in free throw percentage at 79.4%. Snyder’s assist-to-turnover ratio is seventh best (1.45).

Fratz, a native of Accident, MD, concluded her rookie season in the league as the sixth-best scorer at 17.4 points per game.  Her 1.77 steals per outing put her 12th in the WVIAC. Fratz’s 1.65 three-point field goals made per night put her 14th in the conference standings. She picked up a WVIAC Player of the Week honor on December 20, 2011. Her play on the final day of the regular season helped UPJ earn the No. 7 seed in the WVIAC Tournament.

Osborne guided Concord University to a second-place finish after registering a 21-5 overall mark, including an 18-4 record against league competition. The award is the second for Osborne, who also took home the honor in 2003. Osborne coached three student-athletes that picked up all-conference accolades.

Four members of this year’s first-team all-conference selections are repeat first-team award winners. Lydia Bridenbaugh, Jamie Kaufman, Kaitlin Snyder and Tenisha Wilson were all on the first team a season ago.

University of Charleston University senior guard PJ Reyes has been named the WVIAC’s Player of the Year as voted on by the league’s coaches. West Liberty Universityguard C.J. Hester picked up Freshman of the Year honors while West Liberty Universityhead coach Jim Crutchfield picked up his third consecutive Coach of the Year accolade and fourth overall.

Reyes, a 6’5” 190 lb. guard from Taylor, MI, propelled the Golden Eagles to a 23-5 overall record on the season, including an 18-4 mark in WVIAC play. He guided the squad to a No. 2 seed in the WVIAC Tournament and has UC as the No.3 team in the Atlantic Region heading into postseason play.

Reyes is fifth in the conference in scoring at 20.7 points per game. He is also in the top 10 of the league in blocked shots (ninth with 1.04 per outing). Reyes is 16th in the conference in rebounding average, grabbing 6.2 a night.  He is drained 50.2 percent of his shots on the season and is second on UC’s team in steals. Reyes has guided the Golden Eagles to 11 consecutive victories entering the WVIAC Tournament.

Hester, a 6’4” 200 lb. guard from West Miffin, PA, had a big impact for WLU this season. He ranked third on the Hilltoppers’ squad and 28th in the WVIAC with 14.6 points a game. He led the team with 8.8 boards per contest, tying him for third in the league. He also drained 60.9% of his attempts from the floor, which is the fourth best in the conference.

Crutchfield earned his fourth Coach of the Year honor after guiding WLU to its third straight league title and a 26-2 overall mark. The Hilltoppers were 21-1 in WVIAC play. For the second consecutive season, Crutchfield guided WLU to the top spot in the NABC Coaches Poll. Now in his eighth season, Crutchfield has led the Hilltoppers to at least 20 wins every year. WLU leads the nation in scoring at 103.3 points per outing. As a team, the Hilltoppers are netting 50.4% of their shots from the floor and outscore their opponents by 21 points per game.

GSC Women’s Basketball: Glenville State 113, Ohio Valley 89

Glenville State scorched the nets for 113 points en route to a 113-89 win over visiting Ohio Valley.

The Pioneers placed 6 in double figures.

Leading the way was Danielle Woodmore, who accounted for 20 points and 5 assists.

Tenisha Wilson amassed 19 points and 9 rebounds while Kenyell Goodson and Ginny Petties each had 14 points.

Beth Deren and Jelena Elez scored 13 apiece while Mishae Miles had 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Dakeisha Mann and Danielle Sams shared game-high honors with 21 points apiece for the Fighting Scots.

Mann pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds.

Amber Avery netted 16 points while Shelby Way chipped in 11.

Kevin Gray poured in a game-high 27 points for the Pioneers in the win.

Chris Abney connected on seven-of-12 shots for 16 points while Nate Cash amassed 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Octavius Hinnant chipped in 8 points and had 4 assists.

GSC buried 17-of-31 shots in the second half.

Rodney Everage netted a team-high 22 points for the Fighting Scots.

Austin Cunningham continued his solid season with 17 points and 7 assists.

WVIAC Men’s Basketball 2012: Tournament Schedule Set

For the third consecutive season, the West Liberty men’s basketball team will receive a first-round bye for the upcoming WVIAC Tournament after claiming the league’s regular-season crown.

The Hilltoppers concluded the regular season with a record of 26-2 overall and a 21-1 mark in the WVIAC.

The squad totaled a power rating of 187.27 and will not play until the quarterfinals on Thursday at the Civic Center.

Charleston (23-5, 18-4) nabbed the No. 2 seed by finishing with a power rating of 151.82.

Wheeling Jesuit secured third with a win on Saturday.

The Cardinals (20-8, 16-6) amassed a power rating of 141.36.

WV Wesleyan completed the regular season at 19-7 overall and 15-7 in WVIAC play.

The Bobcats produced a power rating of 132.27.

Alderson-Broaddus is the No. 5 seed at 17-9, 14-8.

The Battlers posted a power rating of 118.64.

Concord edged Pitt-Johnstown for the No. 6 spot.

The Mountain Lions (15-11, 12-10) totaled 98.64 power rating points while Pitt-Johnstown took seventh with 98.18 points.

The Mountain Cats finished the regular season at 14-13 overall and 12-10 in league play.

Securing a home game at the No. 8 position was WV State.

The Yellow Jackets (14-12, 12-10) totaled a power rating of 97.27.

Shepherd came in at No. 9 with a power rating of 94.55.

The Rams head into the postseason with a record of 13-13 overall and 11-11 in WVIAC action.

Seton Hill (11-14, 9-13) claimed the No. 10 position with a power rating of 74.55.

Ohio Valley (8-17, 8-14) is No. 11 with a rating of 60.91 while Fairmont State (9-17, 7-15) is No. 12 with a power rating of 50.45.

Glenville State (43.18 points), Davis & Elkins (32.27 points) and Bluefield State round out the 13th-15th spots in the final WVIAC regular-season standings.

First-round match-ups are played on the campuses of the higher seeds.

With an 80-65 road win at Fairmont State on Saturday, WV Wesleyan wrapped up the 2011-12 WVIAC regular-season women’s basketball title.

With the top seed in the upcoming tournament, the Bobcats (21-6, 18-4) will have a first-round bye.

The squad, which totaled a power rating of 162.73, will not play until Wednesday’s quarterfinal in the Civic Center.

Concord (21-5, 18-4) concluded the regular season with a power rating of 158.18, earning the Mountain Lions a second-place finish.

Glenville State posted a mark of 20-6 overall and 18-4 in the league.

The Pioneers’ 157.27 gave the team a third-place regular-season finish.

Shepherd claimed the No. 4 spot with a power rating of 128.64.

The Rams concluded the regular season with a record of 18-10 overall and 15-7 against WVIAC teams.

Fairmont State took the No. 5 spot with a power rating of 113.18.

The Falcons completed the regular season at 17-9 overall and 14-8 in league play.

Davis & Elkins’ road win on Saturday gave the team 100 power rating points, good enough for sixth place.

The Senators registered a 13-13 campaign and were 12-10 in the WVIAC.

Pitt-Johnstown’s win on the final day of the regular season propelled the Lady Cats to a seventh-place finish at 97.73 points.

UPJ garnered a 14-12 mark on the year and a 12-10 effort against WVIAC foes.

Seton Hill’s 95.91 power rating points put the team in eighth place.

The Griffins were 11-17 overall and 10-12 in the conference.

West Liberty recorded a 14-14 overall mark and an 11-11 record in the WVIAC for 94.55 power rating points.

The squad garnered the No. 9 seed. Charleston also won 11 league contests and totaled a power rating of 93.18 for 10th place.

WV State took home the No. 11 spot (68.64 points) while Ohio Valley placed No. 12 in the league with 48.18 points.

Bluefield State claimed the No. 13 position with 45 power rating points while Alderson-Broaddus (33.64 points) and Wheeling Jesuit (12.73 points) rounded out the regular-season standings.

First-round match-ups are played on the campuses of the higher seeds.

Ginny Petties scored a game-high 21 points in 19 minutes off the bench for the victors.

Danielle Woodmore notched 15 points and eight steals to go along with 5 assists.

Jelena Elez had 14 points and 5 assists while Mishae Miles garnered 13 points and 17 rebounds.

Beth Deren and Kenyell Goodson went for 12 points and 10 points, respectively. Aesha Peters grabbed 12 boards.

Jasmine Blanton scored a team-high 12 points for the Yellow Jackets in the loss.

West Liberty, which will most likely be the No. 1 team in the nation in next week’s NABC Division II coaches poll after top-ranked Bellarmine lost earlier this week, defeated Glenville State 103-88 Saturday.

The Hilltoppers were nearly perfect from the foul line, hitting 30-of-32 for the game.

Alex Falk poured in a team-high 28 points to go along with 7 assists and 6 rebounds.

C.J. Hester had a huge game, accounting for 18 points and 17 rebounds.

Cedric Harris hit for 17 points while Tim Hausfeld added 16.

Nick Brown came off the bench to score 11 in just 8 minutes of action.

Kevin Gray drained a game-high 29 points for the Pioneers.

Andy Dollman added 15 markers while Jamel Morris chipped in 14 for GSC.

Nate Cash registered 8 points but pulled down a team-best 13 rebounds.

The Pioneers were a solid 21-of-25 from the charity stripe.

The win was also head coach Jim Crutchfield’s 200th of his career. He became the second-fastest coach in WVIAC history to win 200 career contests, doing so in just 241 games.

GSC Women’s Basketball: Glenville State 106, Bluefield State 74

Glenville State broke open the game in the second half, defeating Bluefield State 106-74 Thursday.

Six Pioneers scored in double figures in the win.

Jelena Elez scored a team-high 22 points while Ginny Petties garnered 21 points and 13 rebounds.

Kenyell Goodson notched 13 markers while Mishae Miles posted 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Tenisha Wilson and Danielle Woodmore had 11 and 10, respectively.

Aesha Peters grabbed 11 boards.

Charlene Diggs scored a game-high 24 points in 27 minutes of action.

She also had four steals.

Shae Mebane narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and 9 rebounds.

Dragana Tomic netted 11 points and dished out a team-high 4 assists.

Glenville State’s solid defense guided the Pioneers to an 86-56 win over Bluefield State.

Andy Dollman and Kevin Gray shared team-best honors by scoring 14 points apiece.

Dollman also had 5 assists.

Jamel Morris totaled 13 points and nine rebounds while Seth Wimbish hit for 13.

Janko Popovic and Mark Walker each netted 10 points in the win.

GSC sank 13 three-point buckets in the victory.

Chase Morgan scored a game-high 15 points to go along with three steals for the Big Blues.

Roy Cooper accounted for 13 points while Daven Morris netted 10.

Morris also grabbed a team-best 8 boards.

Concord knocked off top-seeded Glenville State with a 79-66 win Monday evening.

Jolysa Brown had a huge game with 24 points and 14 rebounds.

She also dished out 6 assists.

Andrea Bertrand totaled 18 points while Camisha Alexander and Amanda Smith knocked in 11 apiece.

Anna Truckley had 6 assists.

Tenisha Wilson scored a team-best 21 points in the loss while Danielle Woodmore accounted for 12.

She also dished out 4 assists.

Mishae Miles hit for just 4 points but grabbed 13 boards.

Basketball: LKC Girls Night of Champions

Taylor Bragg of Braxton County made a perfect 10-of-10 free throws to become the first repeat winner of the foul-shot competition at the LKC Girls Night of Champions at Parkersburg Catholic Saturday.

Runner-up was Tristin Toman of Ritchie County with 9 of 10 free throws made.

Capturing the Top Gun 3-point shoot-out was Amber Wilford of Calhoun County who sank 12 of 25 shots from behind the arc for the Red Devils’ first winner of the event since Brandi Richards in 2001.

Second behind Wilford was a three-way tie between Jacee Markle of Clay County, Taylor Youell of Ravenswood and Liz Flowers of Williamstown with 11-of-25 marks.

Also recognized were the LKC girls basketball Scholar-Athlete winners from each conference school.

Glenville State scorched the nets for 60 first-half points en route to a 112-83 win over Charleston.

Beth Deren scored a game-high 23 points to go along with 6 rebounds in the win.

Jelena Elez had a huge day with 22 points and 16 assists in 36 minutes.

Mishae Miles had 19 points and 12 boards while Tenisha Wilson chipped in 17 points.

Kenyell Goodson came off the bench to net 11.

For the Golden Eagles, Chrissy Keir led the way with a team-best 15 points.

Erika Rousculp totaled 14 to go along with seven rebounds.

Marilene Lapierre had 12 points while Nichole Perry added 11.

Nate Cash, Andy Dollman and Mark Walker all scored 9 points in the contest.

PJ Reyes led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor.

Eladio Espinosa added 21 points and 9 rebounds while Hayden Annett totaled 14.

Marcus Knott dished out 6 assists.

Glenville State notched an 88-80 win over WV Wesleyan in WVIAC action.

Danielle Woodmore accounted for 18 points in the win while Tenisha Wilson totaled 17 and 6 rebounds.

Mishae Miles accounted for 14 points and 19 rebounds, 6 of which came on the offensive glass.

Beth Deren amassed 14 points for the Pioneers, who moved into first place in the league standings.

Lydia Bridenbaugh poured in a game-high 27 points for the Bobcats.

Daria Abros’kina totaled 22 points while Jamie Kaufman had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Brittany Maxey chipped in 10 points and 7 boards.

Raymont McElroy led the way with a game-high 23 points in the win.

Reggie Chambers contributed 10 points.

McElroy and Mike Washington each grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds.

Washington also swatted away 4 shots.

Jamel Morris paced the Pioneers with a team-best 10 points.

Andy Dollman chipped in 9 while Mark Walker hit for 8.

Walker also pulled down 6 rebounds.

WVIAC Men’s Basketball Weekly Preview - 02.06.12

This week, WVIAC squads will be in action for 18 games, 17 of which are league contests.

Alderson-Broaddus has won back-to-back games and is coming off a 31-point home win. The Battlers are outscoring their opponents by over nine points a game. Kurklin Bohanon is averaging a team-high 20.6 points a game while Nate Barnes is netting 16.6. Roy Brown accounts for 11.6 points and Casey Ainslie nets 9.5 a contest. O’Dell Eargle pulls down a team-high 6.8 boards. Barnes has dished out a team-best 105 assists on the season.

Bluefield State has dropped 18 straight contests on the season after opening at 1-1. Chase Morgan guides the Big Blues with his 18.2 points per night average. Vincent Rogers registers 13.2 points and 5.6 rebounds a game while Alex Webb chips in 12.9 points. Morgan has a team-best 73 assists while Webb guides the squad in steals.

The University of Charleston has won six straight contests and 10 of its last 12 outings. PJ Reyes leads the squad with his 19.7 points per game. Evan Faulkner is posting 11.5 points while Eladio Espinosa accounts for 10.6 points and eight rebounds a night. Marcus Knott has dished out a team-best 76 assists while Marco Richardson’s 35 steals are a team high.

Concord has lost three consecutive games after posting back-to-back league wins. Javaughn Acree-Manuel leads the squad with 16.2 points a night. Romel Kemp is hitting for 14.1 points and is pulling down a team-best 6.4 rebounds a game. Corey Neeley and Cory Willard are each adding over 11 points a night. Mike Boyd has registered 87 assists on the season and Kemp has swatted away 37 shots.

Davis & Elkins has dropped seven straight games since a nine-point road win at Seton Hill. Ian Pinckney is netting a team-high 17.1 points a game while Malik Tinsley totals 14.2 points and 6.3 rebounds a game. PJ Turner is adding 14 points a game and has dished out 138 assists on the season. D’Quan Lynch hits for 12.1 points a game and is shooting a solid 51.8 percent from the floor.

Fairmont State has split its last two games and is coming off a close loss to Pitt-Johnstown. Steve Custis leads the team with 23.1 points per night while Isaac Thornton garners 20.1 points and 7.1 boards an outing. Chris Thompson has hit 50.4 percent of his shots from the floor while Melvin Rhodes is canning 38.7 percent of his three-point shots.

Glenville State saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday. Kevin Gray is boasting a solid 17.2 points a night while Jamel Morris is adding 15.1 a game. Nate Cash and Chris Abney are both pulling down over six rebounds a contest. Andy Dollman has a team-high 44 assists while Gray’s 27 steals are the best on the squad.

Ohio Valley has lost back-to-back games, both of which were on the road. Kendall Allison leads the team with 16.9 points per night to go along with 7.4 rebounds a game. Austin Cunningham is just behind him at 15.7 markers a night. Rodney Everage is chipping in 11.4 points and is grabbing a team-best 7.5 rebounds. Jordan Brooks has a team-high 25 steals.

Pitt-Johnstown has won back-to-back games and four of its last five outings. Nick Novak is scoring at a 19.8 point-per game clip on the season while Jordan Miller notches 16 points a game. Patrick Grubbs is contributing 15.9 points and 8.7 rebounds a night. Grubbs is also draining 62.5 percent of his shots from the floor. Paul Weatherly has canned 52.4 percent of his shots from behind the arc.

Seton Hill is coming off a home win against Glenville State. Matt Miller guides the Griffins with 19.6 points a night while Chris Giles is just behind him at 18.2 a game. Andrew Cressler accounts for 10.9 points a game. Oliver Lewinson leads the squad with 6.9 rebounds a contest. Miller boasts a team-best 71 assists while he and Giles each have a team-high 31 steals.

Shepherd is coming off a win and has picked up two victories in its last three outings. Chad Moore leads the team in points (19.1) and rebounds (10.0). Brantley Osborne nets 14.4 points a game while Sidney McCray totals 13.8. Marcus Pilgrim has a team-high 50 assists. Moore posts team highs in blocks (22) and steals (36). Chauncey Burgazli drains 51.2 percent of his shots from the field.

WV State has dropped three consecutive games after notching four straight wins. Corey Bethea garners a team-high 19 points a night while David Ford chips in 16.3. Howard Douglas, III, and Robbie Lewis each hit for over nine points an outing. Delrico Lane has dished out 109 assists and also leads the squad with 51 steals on the season.

WV Wesleyan has reeled off five consecutive wins and has notched seven wins in its last eight games. The Bobcats are outscoring their opponents by nearly 10 a night. Kelsey Williams is scoring 18.9 points a night and is pulling down 10 rebounds a game while WVIAC Player of the Week Raymont McElroy totals 18.7 a game. Reggie Chambers nets 12.9 points a night. 

West Liberty has won 18 consecutive games on the season and leads the WVIAC entering the week with a 15-0 mark. The Hilltoppers are scoring 102.3 points a night and are beating their opponents by 20.6 a game. Six student-athletes are scoring in double figures for WLU. Alex Falk and Cedric Harris are each scoring 16.5 points a game. Chris Morrow (14.4), CJ Hester (13.8), Tim Hausfeld (12.2) and Shawn Dyer (11.7) are also reaching double figures. Hester is pulling down 7.7 boards a night, which is tops on the team. Harris has dished out 109 assists while Falk has notched 62 steals.

Wheeling Jesuit is coming off a victory and has notched seven wins in its last eight games. The Cardinals are outscoring their opponents by 8.6 a game. Steve Catich continues his solid season with 21.2 points a game. Obi Ukwuoma accounts for 13.5 points a night and a team-high 6.7 rebounds a game. Recardo Gaddy adds 12.9 and Ben Siefert chips in 10.2. Siefert has dished out 149 assists on the season and leads the team with 38 steals. Marquis Moore is hitting a spectacular 70.6 percent of his shots from the floor.

This week, 17 games will take place in the WVIAC and every single contest pits a league team against another conference opponent.

Alderson-Broaddus split its last two outings, downing Bluefield State before falling to WV State. Amanda Peoples leads the squad with her 12 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Zipporah Tidwell adds 8.9 points and 6.4 boards an outing. Natalie Smith leads the team in assists and steals. Erica Brooks has knocked down 27 three-point shots.

Bluefield State has dropped 10 consecutive games. The Lady Blues are guided by Charlene Diggs’ 15.5 points and Dragana Tomic’s 10.6 points per outing. Tasia Nolan is hitting for 6.5 points and 7.0 rebounds a night. Tomic leads the squad in assists and steals. Shae Mebane is shooting a team-best 46.9 percent from the field.

The University of Charleston has posted back-to-back wins and has won five of its last seven outings. Erika Rousculp leads the way with 12.5 points and 14.1 rebounds a contest. Lauren Davis and Chrissy Keir are adding 12.1 and 10.4 points, respectively. Keir just broke the school record for consecutive free throws made. Tiffany Scott is draining a team-best 48.2 percent of her shots from the floor.

Concord has lost three straight games but is still outscoring its opponents by 9.2 a night. Jolysa Brown is averaging a double-double with 18.9 points and 11.6 rebounds a game. Andrea Bertrand is accounting for 13.5 points and 7.6 boards a night while Camisha Alexander and Amanda Smith are netting double figures with 12.6 and 10.3 points per game, respectively. Brown leads the team in assists, blocks and steals.

Davis & Elkins has dropped three consecutive games after winning four of the previous five. Jorden Lykes amasses 13.1 points and 8.9 rebounds a game to lead the Senators. Page Turner is not far behind at 12.3 points a game while Rachel Gostsomski is hitting for 11.6 a night. Ashley Bowles has connected on 42 percent of her three-point attempts. Turner leads the team in assists and steals.

Fairmont State has won back-to-back games and has won four of its last six outings. The Falcons are outscoring opponents by 7.6 a night. Kaitlin Snyder leads the team with her 22 points per game. Hailey Garrett is amassing 12.4 points and a team-best 6.5 rebounds a night while Tiffany Nicholson accounts for 10.4 points. Garrett is draining 54.6 percent of her shots from the floor. Snyder leads the team in assists while Nicholson has a team-high 49 steals.

Glenville State saw its six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday. The Pioneers are totaling 96.2 points per game and outscoring the opposition by 12.1. Six players average double figures for GSC. Tenisha Wilson leads the way with 18.9 points while Mishae Miles tallies 14.4 points and 11.7 rebounds a game. Danielle Woodmore adds 12.6 points and leads the team with 100 assists. Beth Deren, Kenyell Goodson and Ginny Petties are all averaging double figures in points.

Ohio Valley had won three of its last four before dropping the last four outings, two of which were on the road. Shante Cummings leads the team with her 14.3 points and 10.5 rebounds a game. Amber Avery is just behind her at 14.1 points and 7.8 boards a night. Shelby Way accounts for 12.9 points while Dakeisha Mann totals 10.4 points and 7.9 rebounds a game. Brittany Taylor has a team-best 59 steals on the season.

Pitt-Johnstown has come on strong, winning four of its last five and nine of its last 12 contests. Leading the way for the Lady Cats is rookie Kaitlynn Fratz, who is pouring in 17.9 points a game. Nicole Carman is posting 10.6 points and pulling down 5.6 rebounds a night. Rachel Johnson is grabbing 5.7 boards a contest to lead the team. Sara Trimarco leads the team in assists and steals. Inaya Stephenson is shooting the best on the squad at 46.7 percent from the floor.

Seton Hill has won three straight games and is coming off a 24-point win over then-league leading Glenville State. Paige Alviani has a team-best 14.9 points per game average while the current WVIAC Player of the Week Tiara Stossel nets 11.5 points. Katie Gattuso tallies 10 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds a game. Alviani leads the team with 84 assists while Anne Marie Olesky has registered 45 steals on the year.

Shepherd has won four straight contests and six of its last seven outings. The team is outscoring its opponents by three a night. Emily Daniel leads the squad with her 13 points a game while Katie Biggs is hitting for a dozen a game. Daniel also owns the team-high 7.6 rebounds per contest average and is shooting a stellar 53.4 percent from the floor. Jenn Prine leads the squad with 72 assists and 34 steals.

WV State has won two of its last three games and is coming off a 14-point road win at Alderson-Broaddus. The Yellow Jackets are winning the turnover battle on the season. Jasmine Blanton paces WVSU with her 14.5 points a game. Jordan Brock and Asia Greenleaf are each scoring just under 10 points a game, but Greenleaf leads the squad with 7.3 rebounds. Blanton has dished out a team-best 78 assists while she and Greenleaf share team-high honors with 32 steals apiece. Sissy Wagner is chipping in 8.7 points a game.

WV Wesleyan has won five straight games, propelling the Bobcats into first place in the WVIAC standings. Lydia Bridenbaugh accounts for a team-high 21.8 points a game while Jamie Kaufman pours in 19.7 points. Kaufman also grabs 8.6 rebounds a night. Erica Hershberger leads the team with 80 assists and 23 steals. She also has nailed 40 percent of her three-point attempts.

Wheeling Jesuit has dropped two consecutive games after winning two of its previous three contests. Cassy Sanders paces the Cardinals with her 15.7 points a game. Emily Robinson adds 13.3 markers a night while Lucy DeFruscio and Erica Schultz are each posting over eight a game. Schultz has pulled down 7.8 rebounds a game. Robinson and Taneka Lewis have each dished out over 70 assists on the season.

13 year old 7th grader Noah Aviles was allowed to play with the 8th grade team after winning the 7th grade game.
He was put in at the 3rd period when the 8th graders were down 12 points.
He got numerous defensive blocks and scores.
With 6.4 seconds left and the score titans 37 Doddridge bobcats 38 he hits a 3point shot to win the game at the buzzer.
This was Thursday night.

The picture of him up against number22 was Doddridge’s best scorer for the 8th grade.
Noah blocked him numerous times.

GSC Men’s Basketball: Seton Hill 74, Glenville State 51

A hot-shooting Seton Hill squad posted a 74-51 win over visiting Glenville State Saturday afternoon.

Chris Giles guided the victors with 30 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists.

Matt Miller was the only other Griffin to score in double figures, netting 12.

He also pulled down 6 rebounds.

Oliver Lewinson grabbed 9 boards.

SHU sank 26-of-42 from the field (61.9%) for the game.

The Pioneers were paced by Andy Dollman’s 10 points in the loss.

Kevin Gray accounted for 9 markers while Mark Walker came off the bench to total 7 points and grab a team-high 6 rebounds.

GSC buried 10-of-13 charity tosses in the contest.

The Pioneers return to action on Thursday, February 09, 2012, when GSC travels WV Wesleyan.

Game time is set for 7:30 PM.
