Michigan Prez Concedes an “OOPS!” on RichRod Hire
A 15-22 overall record, an embarrassing 6-18 mark in Big Ten play, the first major violations in the football program’s history and disgruntled fans and alumni alike were the wreckage left in the wake of the Rich Rodriguez era at Michigan.
Even to those wearing the deepest hue of maize-and-blue-colored glasses, the RichRod experiment was an abject failure that could’ve set the program back several years.
At a Rotary Club function in Flint, Michigan, Friday, May 11, 2012, UM president Mary Sue Coleman allowed as much, with mlive.com writing that “Coleman admitted… that the university made the wrong choice bringing in Rich Rodriguez as head football coach.”
As noted by AnnArbor.com, it was the first time Coleman, who along with then-athletic director Bill Martin hired Rodriguez to take over for Lloyd Carr in 2008, had publicly made such an admission.
The criticism of Carr and his conservative offensive approach, Coleman said, led the university to do a 180-degree philosophical turn from the previous regime.
“We though, OK, well let’s go hire the guy who invented the spread offense,” Coleman, presumably facetiously, told the crowd before rhyming her way to the conclusion that “[h]e was a hot, young coach with a different approach.”
Despite his West Virginia roots, RichRod was never “the Michigan man” most had come to expect as head of the storied program. RichRod’s successor, Brady Hoke, on the other hand? He eats, sleeps and breathes that moniker.
“He has more of the kind of Midwestern ethos,” Coleman said of Hoke.
And he has more of that winning ethos to which Michigan has become accustomed, producing in his first year with the Wolverines the program’s first 11-win season since 2006.
Rodriguez, meanwhile, has landed on his coaching feet, with Coleman saying she is “very happy” for Rodriguez and his new gig at Arizona. We’re quite certain that many a Michigan fan would concur, that they are very happy RichRod’s in Arizona as well.

Register Now for GSC Pioneer Football Camp 2012
Members of the Glenville State College Football team are hosting their annual Pioneer Football Camp June 24-26, 2012.
This is an instructional camp directed by Head Coach David Hutchison, his staff, and current GSC players.
The Pioneer Football Camp is a non-pad instructional football camp for players in grades 5-12.
The goal of the camp is to teach and improve football skills and techniques that can take your game to a higher level and jump-start your season.
Head Coach David Hutchison and his outstanding staff will teach the skills, techniques, and fundamentals that will enable children and teens to reach their full potential.
All campers will receive quality instruction for both offensive and defensive positions. This camp is highly organized and structured to give every camper, regardless of skill level, the same top-notch instruction and attention. This camp does not require football equipment.
The GSC football coaching staff also uses this opportunity to evaluate high school prospects for the upcoming years.
In 2010, GSC discovered six student athletes at the Pioneer Football Camp and signed them to play for Pioneer Football Program.
The Pioneer Football Camp takes advantage of some of the best facilities in the West Virginia conference including: fully lighted field turf at I.L. and Sue Morris stadium, field house and weight room complex, indoor pool, and air-conditioned resident halls.
The cost of the camp is $175 for overnight campers or $125 for day campers.
Pre-registration will take place through June 20th by completing the camp application and sending it along with a $25 deposit to GSC Football, Glenville State College, 200 High Street, Glenville, West Virginia 26351.
Campers will be permitted to register after June 20, 2012 through the beginning of camp for an additional $15 late registration fee.
Check-in will take place between 2:00 and 4:00 PM on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at Pickens Hall on the GSC campus.

Governor Tomblin Proclaims May Motorcycle Safety Month
Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, joined by the Division of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Joe Miller, the Governor’s Highway Safety Program Director Bob Tipton and motorcyclists from across the state, as he proclaimed May 2012 as Motorcycle Safety Month.
“As the temperature warms, motorcyclists from across the country come to West Virginia to cruise our roadways, to take in the views of our stunning hills and valleys,” Governor Tomblin said. “When traveling other motorists tend to have difficulty seeing motorcyclists nearby. This year, I encourage all drivers to share the road and look twice for a motorcyclist this month and throughout the riding season.”

WV Board of Education Seeks Public Input on WVSSAC Proposals
The West Virginia Board of Education is seeking public comment on proposals to alter athletic transfer rules and other policies governing band and athletic programs.
During their May meeting, board members placed proposed changes to keep the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) current and updated on changes, trends, issues on public comment for 30 days.
The changes would bring state policy in compliance with a court order in treating all member schools equal in transfers.
The changes also would clarify middle school enrollment and team membership; student eligibility to practice; and when an individual must be removed from an event if a violation occurs.
A Monongalia County Circuit judge invalidated current rules governing student transfers in a December decision that said the WVSSAC does not treat public and private member schools the same in considering transfers.
Robert Konchesky of Morgantown challenged the rules after his daughter transferred from the University High School, a public school in Monongalia County, to Trinity Christian, a private school, for her sophomore year and was ordered to sit out one year.
Most public and private schools in West Virginia are members of the WVSSAC.
Each year, the principals of member schools submit revisions to the rules and regulations, and then the submitted proposals are presented and voted upon at the annual Board of Control meeting.
Any approved changes are then submitted to the West Virginia State Board of Education for its review and approval.
The WVSSAC will present comments received about the changes to the state board at its June meeting.
Educators, parents and community members are encouraged to review the policies and make suggestions.
The policies can be viewed and comments can be submitted by logging onto the West Virginia Department of Education website at wvde.state.wv.us/policies.

GSC Baseball Team Helps Spruce up Yeager Airport
In their first season of intercollegiate baseball since 1983, the Glenville State College Pioneers have struggled through growing pains that were to be expected from a first-year program.
A small roster of mostly young inexperienced players has led to a 5-38 record.
However, the record belies the hard work and dedication that the team has demonstrated both on and off the field.
During the course of this first season, the Pioneers have not only put in the long hours required for practice travel and playing so many games, but they also found time to give back to their community and their state.
The Pioneer baseball team pitched in to help Yeager Airport
On Friday, April 20, 2012, prior to an afternoon double-header with the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State University, the Pioneer Baseball team spent the morning beautifying the entrance area to Yeager Airport in Charleston, West Virginia. The players and coaches landscaped and planted Rhododendrons and other decorative plants near the new airport sign.
“It was an honor for the baseball team to represent Glenville State College with the beautification of Yeager Airport. I believe that it is our duty to in some way repay the community for the support and opportunities that we are given as athletes,“ said GSC Head Baseball Coach Tom Gilbert.
“The Glenville State baseball team was a tremendous help in the ongoing beautification efforts at Yeager Airport. Their teamwork was evident as they planted shrubs and placed mulch around the entrance sign to the airport. We are so pleased with the tremendous partnership that has been forged between GSC and Yeager Airport, said Rick Atkinson, Airport Director.
The morning’s work was the latest effort by the Glenville State College ‘Adopt an Airport’ project which started in 2009. The project is a partnership between the Glenville State College Land Resources Department and Yeager Airport to environmentally reclaim the land that was disturbed during the extension of the runway. GSC students, faculty, staff, and volunteers have spent many hours planting trees on the slopes around the airport that had been cleared for runway extension. To date, the GSC initiative has resulted in the planting of more than ten-thousand trees at the site.
Pioneer baseball team with a job well done
“The work that was done by the GSC baseball team is some very nice window dressing for the reclamation that has already been accomplished at the airport. We plan to include yearly beautification projects as part of our Earth Day activities and our ongoing effort to help Yeager Airport,“ said Dr. Bob Henry Baber, GSC Major Gifts Officer who has spearheaded the ‘Adopt an Airport’ project.
The planting at Yeager Airport was just the latest community service project conducted by the GSC baseball team. The team has also spent time visiting with residents of the local nursing home on a few occasions, assisted the Gilmer County Recreation Center with some moving chores, and helped raise money for the GSC Relay for Life.
“As a team, we really enjoyed our service projects. It is good to get out in the community and meet the public and let them get to know us. These types of activities helps build character and brings us more together as a team,“ said Brock McClung, Pioneer pitcher/third baseman. McClung is a sophomore Environmental Science major from Point Pleasant (Mason County), West Virginia.

Five GSC Softball Player Earn WVIAC Honors
Glenville State first year Head Softball Coach Mandy Sansbury had five players earn WVIAC honors in 2012.
Freshman centerfielder Carlee Chatron was named to the WVIAC Second Team. Charlee had 47 hits, eight RBI’s, and had a team high 18 stolen bases.
Also named to the WVIAC Second Team was sophomore third baseman Kayleigh Huck. Kayleigh had 49 hits, and scored 25 runs. She also had a .358 batting average, 31 RBI’s, and had six homeruns.

Sophomore outfielder Carly Caldon, junior pitcher/first baseman Maegan Lesser, and senior catcher Lacey Metheney were all named WVIAC Honorable Mention.
Congratulations to these young ladies for having an outstanding 2012 season.

Charleston Gazette Relays: Gilmer Leaper Anthony Aviles Takes Down Record in Style
Anthony Aviles of Gilmer County said he came in wanting to set the bar high in his first event at the Gazette Relays, the high jump.
Not only did he set it high, he cleared it, setting a new Class A meet record in the process as the first day went in the books on Friday night at Laidley Field.
As it turns out, his new mark of 6-feet, 8 1/4 inches was not only a personal best, but Aviles even exceeded his own expectations.
“I feel great, that was the first time I’ve cleared anything above 6-5 and I was just feeling good so I went up 2 inches [actually 3 1/4] to the meet record and got it,“ Aviles said. “I’ve been working hard, but it’s a good day — it’s a real good day.“
The new mark bested a jump of 6-8 set by Brent Ransbottom of Chesapeake, Ohio in 2006.
Aviles’ conquest came early in the afternoon on Friday, but he wasn’t the only athlete that quickly made his presence felt.

Even up to this date the county school system has not recognized his accomplishments from last year state meet record holding jump.

If it was anyone else in this county they would be running fire trucks and police cars celebrating as they did for golf teams and volleyball teams for just winning state. Do records count? Sorry Anthony you don’t matter.

You all should be ashamed of yourself using this kid’s accomplishment to promote your bias against the school system and certain citizens of the county. County escorts are ONLY given to teams that win championships. I have NEVER heard of this being done for someone who sets a record.
Some of you are so angry that your common sense has taken a vacation. Telling a kid he doesn’t matter is ridiculous and irresponsible. You should retract your comments and apologize to the student.

GSC Selects New Pioneer Mascot for 2012-2013
Niekoli ‘Nicco’ Mills, a sophomore from New Cumberland (Hancock County), West Virginia has been chosen as the Glenville State College Pioneer Mascot for the 2012-2013 school year.
He was selected after completing the Pioneer Mascot application process which includes an essay, references, and an interview with the selection committee.
“I have always had a lot of school spirit at Oak Glen High School and now here at GSC, so I thought that I would make a great Pioneer. I am going to do everything I can to motivate the students and fans at Pioneer athletic contests and other GSC events,“ said Mills
Mills is majoring in criminal justice at GSC and hopes to pursue a career investigating sexual based crimes. He is well acquainted with Pioneer athletics. Mills throws the discus, hammer, and shot put as a member of the GSC Track and Field team.
As the GSC Pioneer, Mills’ duties will include attending GSC football and basketball games, tournaments, and other school events. The Pioneer is charged with working with GSC students, faculty, and staff to positively promote and support the college. The official uniform of the GSC Pioneer mascot is a set of buckskins, a coonskin hat, and a musket.
“Niekoli Mills will be a wonderful asset to the Glenville State College community as our next GSC Pioneer. Nicco, as most of the students refer to him, is very humble about becoming the Pioneer. He is truly excited for this position and has some wonderful ideas to get school spirit up on campus. His excitement is truly contagious and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for being the Pioneer,“ said Jodi Ocheltree, GSC Director of Student Activities and a member of the Pioneer selection committee.
The new Pioneer will begin his tenure at the GSC Fall Convocation on Friday, August 17, 2012. His first football game as the Pioneer Mascot will be on Thursday, September 06, 2012 when the Pioneers host Fairmont State University at 7:00 PM at Morris Stadium.
“I am going to try to lead by the example of my Pioneer spirit. Hopefully that will help the entire campus and community get excited and involved too,“ added Mills.
Mills is the son of Munch and Dineen Mills of New Cumberland.

Glenville State’s Baseball Team Does Community Work in Charleston
Instead of bats and balls, the Glenville State College baseball team had rakes and shovels in hand Friday morning, April 21, 2012.
They worked with the staff at Yeager Airport in Charleston on a beautification project at the entranceway of the state’s largest airport.
The team was in the Charleston area to play West Virginia State University Friday afternoon and Coach Tom Gilbert says his guys were up for a challenge.
“They were gung-ho to come down here and do a little community service,“ the coach said.
The players planted small pines and flowering bushes at the Yeager Airport welcome sign on the way up the hill to the facility.
Two members of the team are forestry majors.
They felt right at home digging in the dirt. For some of the others, it was a first time experience.
Glenville has been working with Yeager for several years.
Students and faculty re-landscaped the hillside facing I-77 in 2008 after the airport moved mountains of earth to lengthen the runway.
“Four years ago they planted over 10,000 trees at the airport and we thought we’d come and add a little to that with the beautification of the entrance,” Coach Gilbert said.“
With a new sign and new landscaping, Yeager Airport has a brand new look.

It is great that there are more posting about student accomplishments. The non jocks deserve praise too. Regarding land reclamation work for the students, why is it that the marred hillside at Hays City behind Waco is not taken on as a community improvement project by GSC? That place is a severe eyesore. Perhaps local citizens could take up a collection to pay for the project. Ike’s memorial mound along Mineral Road has good ground cover thanks to proper land care.

Geez Louise, it is too bad the baseball team couldn’t help in cleaning up the RAPE PROBLEM at GSC. Several VICTIMS have expressed an opinion that it is NOT SAFE for ANY FEMALE AT GSC!!
Nice, plant some tree’s but ravage the women, and leave them totally ruined, humiliated and psychological, and physically damaged, with all their hopes in dreams SHATTERED!!
Just look what GERRY HOUGH did to Mary Hudnall. Mary was a nice girl that worked at the GO MART, and they frightened her enough with threats of BEING RAPED AGAIN, from what I am told if she showed up to testify against GABE PHROPHET a football player in magistrate court.

In regards to the hillside at Hay City, I heard that the Land Resources Dept. or someone at GSC approached the Dept. of Highways about planting some trees there and they were turned down. I don’t know how factual that is. There should be something there besides a large expanse of grass.

That hillside at Hays City. Isn’t that where the road is to built, up over the hill to the College’s big, humongous, dirt pile, stalled project, is supposed to go?
The project that is being rebid, leaving OUT the medical portion, since the medical folks at Minnie Hamilton said it was not a sustainable project?
No sense planting tress where the GC Dirt Mover will build a road?

Glenville: Rumble on the Hill - 04.21.12 - This Saturday
Weston: 5K Run/Walk and Wee Run - 04.21.12
Organizers of the fifth annual Weston 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 21, 2012 want to make sure that area children can be involved in the healthy activity.
They have added a short foot race for children 10 and younger named the Weston Wee Run.
At 11:00 AM young participants will run from East Second Street to First Street, along Court Avenue in Weston.
The children will receive a T-shirt and prize for the event.
The Weston 5K Run and Wellness Walk will begin at 10:00 AM.
The event is being sponsored and organized by Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, the city of Weston and Saint Patrick Church and School cooperate for the event.
“We are getting interest from a variety of groups,“ said Mary Hendricks, co-chair. “We want everyone to realize that this isn’t just for runners, but for everyone who want to get out and walk their way to wellness. The addition of the Wee Run several years ago was a way for us to encourage residents of all ages to get out and walk or run to wellness.”
Prizes in both the female and male contests are:
$150 first place
$75 second place
$25 third place
This year there are 10 age categories which include younger than 11; 11-15; 16-20; 21-25; 26-35; 36-45; 46-55; 56-65; 66-75; 76-plus.
