WV Will Begin Rabies Vaccine Bait Drop September 11-18, 2011

West Virginia will soon begin distributing oral rabies vaccine bait in several counties to help stop the spread of the disease in raccoons.
Counties include:
• Barbour
• Boone
• Braxton
• Brooke
• Clay
• Doddridge
• Fayette
• Greenbrier
• Hancock
• Harrison
• Kanawha
• Lewis
• Marion
• Marshall
• McDowell
• Mercer
• Monongalia
• Nicholas
• Ohio
• Pleasants
• Pocahontas
• Raleigh
• Randolph
• Ritchie
• Summers
• Taylor
• Tyler
• Upshur
• Webster
• Wetzel
• Wyoming
The Department of Health and Human Services will start the distribution September 11, 2011 and should finish by September 18, 2011.
Some bait will be dropped by hand, and some will be dropped from low-flying planes.
The goal is to create an invisible barrier of immunity to stop rabies from spreading.
The vaccine bait has two forms:
• One looks like a fig cookie
• The other like a ketchup package with a brown, fish meal coating
The bait is not harmful to pets but can cause indigestion.
Health officials say people should not try to take the baits away from dogs or cats if they find it.
More information can be found at WV Department of Health and Human Resources or by calling 1.800.423.1271.

NWS: Excessive Heat Warning Remains in Effect from Noon to 8:00 PM Today – 07.21.11
• Heat Index Values: 105-107.
• Timing: Noon Thursday to 8:00 PM Thursday evening.
• Impacts: Heat illness will be possible for people spending an extended amount of time outdoors or engaging in strenuous outdoor activities. This would be especially true for the elderly. Pets are also vulnerable to heat related stress and should be checked on to make sure plenty of water and shade are available to them.
Precautionary/Preparedness Actions :
• An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur.
• The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely.
• Drink plenty of fluids.
• Stay in an air-conditioned room.
• Stay out of the sun.
• Check in on relatives and neighbors.
• Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
• When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
• Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
• Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
Heat Stroke is an emergency - call 9 1 1.
