Area Residents Featured in GSC ‘West Virginia Veteran’s Legacy Project’ Book and Documentary

The Gilmer Free Press

In September of 2011, Glenville State College established the ‘West Virginia Veteran’s Legacy Project’. This project builds on Glenville State College’s World War II Heroes Project, which records and preserves the experiences of West Virginia veterans from that specific conflict.

The ‘West Virginia Veteran’s Legacy Project’ focuses on collecting, preserving, and broadcasting stories of West Virginia war veterans who served in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War as well as the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Historically, West Virginia has had and continues to have the highest per capita military service rate in the United States.

Over two-hundred interviews with veterans and family and friends of deceased veterans have been conducted for the project. The stories they tell and the memories they reveal are creating a living picture of the brutality, confusion, and sacrifices of war.

The project has resulted in the publishing of a book and the production of a film documentary that highlights many of the veterans who have participated in this extensive endeavor.

The book ‘Heroes Among Us-A Tradition of Service’ is a collection of photographs, both new and old, with succinct vet quotes and short stories that have been collected by the project.

Braxton County residents who are featured in the book are:

•  George Lee Fisher of Little Birch

•  John Morrison of Little Birch

•  Gary King of Gassaway

The documentary was shown on West Virginia PBS during November 2012. Kenneth Freshour of Sutton and George Lee Fisher are Braxton County residents who are featured in the film. DVDs of the documentary can be purchased for $10 each.

A package deal is available that includes a DVD and book for just $15. This would make a meaningful gift for veterans and their family and friends.

Week before Christmas
In this week before Christmas, the excitement of the season is tempered by sadness as the nation comes to grips with the evil visited upon the elementary school in Connecticut.  As a parent of grown children and now a grandparent of four wonderful kids, the children murdered were approximately the same age as our grandkids.  Caring teachers and administrators were also killed while trying to shield their students from harm.

School Tragedy in Connecticut
From the time I first learned of this unspeakable tragedy, this cruel and senseless act has consumed my thoughts and prayers.  The demented and cowardly man that perpetrated this horrific mass murder on kids, teachers and his own mother, also took his own life.  Otherwise, the loss of life would likely have been much greater.  Right now that is of little consolation to grief-stricken parents, siblings and friends.

These were first graders.  They were innocent boys and girls with literally their entire lives before them.  We all share in this profound sadness as America comes together to wrap the nation’s arms around the survivors and their grieving families.  And we will hug our kids a little tighter and longer in the days ahead.

Cox’s Mill Water Project
At the Capitol last week, the culmination of efforts to fund the Cox’s Mills waterline extension project was rewarded as Governor Tomblin awarded the remaining $1.3 million in needed infrastructure funding.  I am pleased that several Gilmer County representatives were in Charleston last Wednesday afternoon to accept a Small Cities Block Grant award at the Culture Center.  As a legislative meeting scheduled for the same time as Governor Tomblin’s presentation prohibited me from attending, I am pleased that my assistant Jennifer McPherson could be present at the event to welcome Gilmer County Commissioners Darrel Ramsey, Brian Kennedy and Chester Shores, Gilmer Public Service District members Sallie Mathess, Bill Stalnaker and Ed Talbott, and County Administrator Cindy Wilson.  This $3.2 million project will extend water service to approximately 104 households.

The grant was part of more than $12.5 million in Small Cities Block Grant dollars approved by the Governor for 17 infrastructure projects around the state.  According to the Governor’s office, more than $66 million in other federal, state, and local funds will be leveraged to complete these projects-serving approximately 12,200 citizens, of which nearly 60% are low-and moderate-income individuals.  More than 5,480 households in these communities will receive improved or new service as a result of these investments.

Last December, the Gilmer County Commission received $200,000 toward this project - with the assurance from the Governor’s Office that additional monies would be presented in the next fiscal year.  Funding for this critical infrastructure project will assist the Gilmer County Commission and Gilmer County PSD as they work to meet the basic needs of residents of the Cox’s Mill vicinity.

511 Traveler Information System
On Wednesday, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and West Virginia Secretary of Transportation Paul Mattox launched West Virginia’s new free 511 Traveler Information System. West Virginia 511 provides real-time traffic information, including congestion, crashes, construction, lane closures, road conditions and severe weather information on all of West Virginia’s interstates and other major highways.

I applaud Governor Tomblin and the Department of Transportation for providing this incredible resource to the public.  This is a much needed tool - especially in light of the recent massive detours due to the fire from the natural gas pipeline explosion on I-77 near Sissonville - that will provide up-to-date information to travelers on our state’s highways and byways.

More information from the Governor’s Office about the program:  Motorists can receive real-time traffic updates 24 hours a day by calling 511 toll-free, visiting WV511.org, downloading the free WV 511 Drive Safe mobile app for Android and iPhone, or following WV 511 on Twitter. West Virginia Department of Transportation encourages drivers to “Know Before You Go” by using the West Virginia 511 system before getting behind the wheel.

The WV511.org website provides an interactive map with the locations of traffic incidents, roadway construction and weather advisories. The map also allows users to view traffic cameras from around the state in addition to showing the location of electronic roadway signs and their current messages.

»  The firearm antlered deer bag limit during the two-week buck season is two (one on the base license and one on an RG [resident] or RRG [nonresident] stamp). A hunter may take no more than three antlered deer per calendar year in all archery and firearms seasons combined.

»  The last day to purchase an additional buck deer gun tag (Class RG/RRG Stamp) was November 18, 2012. Class RG and Class RRG additional buck stamps can only be used to take an additional antlered deer in firearm buck season. Unused Class RG and Class RRG stamps may not be used in antlerless or muzzleloader seasons.

»  There are 10 counties or portions thereof (see the 2012 – 2013 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Summary) that require buck firearms hunters to take an antlerless deer during the antlerless firearms deer season (with Class N permit for residents or Class NN permit for nonresidents) prior to harvesting a second antlered deer during the buck firearms season.

»  All private and public lands in counties having a firearms antlerless deer gun season (Class N for residents and Class NN for nonresidents) will be open November 19 – December 01, 2012 (concurrent with the buck gun season), December 13 - 15, and December 28 – 31, 2012. Bag limits vary among counties but will be either one or three antlerless deer.

»  All deer must be field tagged and checked in within 72 hours of the time of kill or within 24 hours of the close of the season, whichever comes first. Additional deer may not be taken until all previously taken deer have been checked. Only one deer may be taken per day during the buck season.

»  Deer hunters spend an estimated $230 million in West Virginia, much of it in the rural areas of the state that depend upon the deer seasons for a large portion of their annual income.

»  In 2011, deer hunters in West Virginia harvested 60,157 bucks during the two-week buck season, an increase of 38 percent from the 2010 harvest. This is two percent less than the five-year average harvest of 61,428 and ranks 24th among all past years.

»  WVDNR forecasts that the buck harvest should be slightly higher for 2012. All regions should see a similar-to-higher harvest this year. The increased reproduction of 2011 and the mild winter of 2011-2012 should mean that there are plenty of 1.5-year-old animals for hunters. The overall mast conditions should be favorable. In addition, DNR has been conducting spotlight counts in many counties and have observed many large-racked animals for hunters to pursue.

»  Sunday hunting is legal in the following 14 counties on private land only: Boone, Brooke, Clay, Hancock, Jefferson, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Marshall, Mingo, Ohio, Wayne, Wetzel and Wyoming. The only Sunday that is open in these counties during the buck season is November 25, 2012. Hunters are reminded that deer gun seasons are closed in Logan, Mingo, McDowell and Wyoming counties.

»  Hunters are required to wear at least 400 square inches of blaze orange (about the size of a vest) as an outer garment for visibility and safety. Blaze orange camouflage patterns are legal as long as 400 square inches of blaze orange are displayed on the garment. A blaze orange hat is not required, but the hunter must have blaze orange visible from both the front and the back.

Gilmer County High School Student Participates in Mock Mars Mission with NASA

Larisa Gordon, a student at Gilmer County High School, in Glenville, West Virginia, recently returned from a week at NASA where she planned a simulated mission to Mars and experienced life as an engineer and scientist.

Gordon was one of eighty-four female high school students from twenty-nine states who visited Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas to participate in the Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars project, or WISH.

The Gilmer Free Press

NASA sponsored two six-day summer camps for rising high school seniors during late June and early July. The young women worked in teams with female NASA mentors to develop mission plans for launching to Mars, living and working there, and integrating the many components necessary for a successful planetary mission. They worked within the confines of a fictitious budget and built several small mockups of vehicles to demonstrate a successful launch and landing of the Mars spacecraft.

“It was fun to learn about the various jobs that NASA has to offer. Planning a mission to Mars was hard because every small detail mattered. While working within our teams, we learned how important it was to communicate,” said Gordon.

The young women were selected based on completion of interactive, online lessons focused on space exploration and mapped to national education standards, academic merits and geographic diversity. The WISH program encourages young women to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics degrees and exposes them to the real-world applications of STEM careers at NASA.
