Area Residents Featured in GSC ‘West Virginia Veteran’s Legacy Project’ Book and Documentary
In September of 2011, Glenville State College established the ‘West Virginia Veteran’s Legacy Project’. This project builds on Glenville State College’s World War II Heroes Project, which records and preserves the experiences of West Virginia veterans from that specific conflict.
The ‘West Virginia Veteran’s Legacy Project’ focuses on collecting, preserving, and broadcasting stories of West Virginia war veterans who served in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War as well as the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Historically, West Virginia has had and continues to have the highest per capita military service rate in the United States.
Over two-hundred interviews with veterans and family and friends of deceased veterans have been conducted for the project. The stories they tell and the memories they reveal are creating a living picture of the brutality, confusion, and sacrifices of war.
The project has resulted in the publishing of a book and the production of a film documentary that highlights many of the veterans who have participated in this extensive endeavor.
The book ‘Heroes Among Us-A Tradition of Service’ is a collection of photographs, both new and old, with succinct vet quotes and short stories that have been collected by the project.
Braxton County residents who are featured in the book are:
• George Lee Fisher of Little Birch
• John Morrison of Little Birch
• Gary King of Gassaway
Calhoun County residents who are featured in the book is:
• Richard McCartney of Grantsville
Gilmer County residents who are featured in the book are:
• Willie Barton of Glenville
• Ann Jones of Cox’s Mills
• Joseph Kemper of Cox’s Mills
• Benjamin Mick of Cedarville
• Warren Matheny of Sand Fork
• Damon West of Troy
• Dr. Peter Barr of Glenville
• Dr. Ed Wood of Glenville
Copies of ‘Heroes Among Us-A Tradition of Service’ may be purchased for just $10 each.
The documentary ‘Tradition of Service’ is approximately 50 minutes long and gives a brief overview of West Virginians’ history of service in the military, while including actual interview material and photographs from the ‘West Virginia Veteran’s Legacy Project’. The documentary was shown on West Virginia PBS during November 2012. Kenneth Freshour of Sutton and George Lee Fisher are Braxton County residents who are featured in the film. DVDs of the documentary can be purchased for $10 each.
A package deal is available that includes a DVD and book for just $15. This would make a meaningful gift for veterans and their family and friends.
Purchases may be made at the GSC Foundation Office in the Heflin Administration Building. Orders may also be mailed to you by contacting Michelle Clowser at “www.Michelle.Clowser@ glenville.edu” or by calling 304.462.6380. A $2.50 base shipping charge does apply to all mail orders.
The GSC ‘West Virginia Veteran’s Legacy Project’ has also created a traveling photo exhibit which is now on display at the Beckley Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The photo exhibit and a traveling historical display are both available free of charge for display at other healthcare facilities, businesses, libraries, events, and organizations’ meeting areas.

Bob is a highly respected member of the community. Many of you know Bob as a Little League Coach for Normantown Elementary. He led the girls and boys to many victories, probably more than any other coach in the county.
In those days, Bob did not coach because his son or daughter was on the team. He coached because he loved the game. Of all the coaches, Bob Minigh was the most fair. He believed that every child deserved the opportunity to play the game, and everyone on the team had an equal chance, no matter who the child was related to.

Bob was known as a coach who would take a chance on a kid that no one else would give a second glance.
Many of these kids could not afford shoes or equipment, but Bob made sure they had everything they needed. They were the sharpest team on the field.
As an example, some of you may remember when Bob coached 5th and 6th graders in basketball at Normantown.
He had seven basketball players who played in the championship game against Glenville Elementary, a team of twenty boys.
In the first quarter, two of the Normantown ball players fouled out. After a third ball player fouled out, the Normantown team had to finish with four ball players.
Those four Normantown boys were exhausted, but Glenville Elementary had a bench full of boys itching to get into the game.
Glenville coaches kept their starters in because they wanted to win.
When Normantown Elementary won the championship game with four players, the opposing team fell to their knees and cried in defeat.
They had given all they had, but that was not enough to conquer Bob Minigh’s Normantown Vikings.

The citizens of Gilmer County will never be able to repay Bob for his kindness to the youngsters in the county because Bob is not an ordinary man.
He is a hero to many young people who have grown into respectable, caring people who use Bob’s example in their everyday lives.

Simultaneously this individual became involved in oil and gas exploration and production in Gilmer and surrounding counties and spent 45 years in this business.
Throughout these two career involvements, he employed many workers who speak highly of him referring to him as operating like a head of a family, like a father who takes good care of the family members.
It is interesting to note that Bill is honored by the Motor Cycle Association by having his picture located on the Wall of Fame in down town Daytona Beach because of his successful involvement in motor cycle business and racing.
Bill married Joan Boan and together they reared three children, one daughter, Linda, and two sons, Mark and Billy.
The Kennedy’s have twelve grandchildren. Tremendous love and appreciation for each other exists in this family.
Bill and Joan are deeply religious and personally involved in their church, the Liberty Independent Baptist Church where they currently live in Glenwood, Florida. They are supportive in both monetary and personal support.
One person who nominated Bill Kennedy referred to him as a humanitarian because of the many good deeds he had done.
He is a strong believer in young people acquiring a quality education and gave his support to the Scholarship Committee in the establishment of the Normantown High School Alumni Scholarship Program. Since 1988, this program has awarded 316 scholarships totaling $231,419.00 to students living in the Normantown attendance area. Bill has made many major financial contributions to it.
In addition he has actively served twelve years as chair of the Alumnus of the Year Committee, a position he relinquished last year because of illness.
The presenter related that this graduate of Normantown High School has a very deep abiding love for Normantown High School, its graduates and the Normantown High School Alumni Association. He is a faithful attendee at reunions and is always willing to do anything to help the association.
At one point when the Gilmer County Board of Education was considering what to do with the Normantown High School building because of certain health hazards, he offered to personally fund the complete renovation of one room of the school on behalf of the class of 1954 and challenged other graduates to do the same for their class. Needless to say this proposal fell on deaf ears at the Board of Education level.
Bill was unable to attend the meeting to receive this prestigious award due to heart surgery performed on him May 22, 2012.
Gary G. Smith, chair of the committee presented the award to his sister in law, Mrs. Rodney Moss, of Cedarville, WV.

Gilmer County Fire Department Information #2 – 05.06.12

Several members of the Gilmer County Volunteer Fire Department recently attended a class on building construction at the West Virginia State Fire Academy located in Jacksons Mills. The instructor discussed the manufactured materials used to build many homes today. These materials lose strength quickly once they start burning and cause the structure to collapse earlier during a fire compared to older homes built with solid wood framing.
In the event of a fire the most important priority is for you and your family to get out of the house as soon as possible. Modern furnishings with fabrics made from petroleum based products burn much faster than the wool, cotton, and silks once used in homes. Tests have shown that everything in a room with modern materials will be on fire in less than four minutes. In a room without any petroleum based products it may take more than an hour before everything is on fire.
The instructor called modern materials solidified gasoline. These include the fabrics, the foam seat cushions on furniture and the carpets made from recycled plastic bottles. Carbon monoxide is released when they burn along with a form of cyanide that can cause quick death. Because house fires today burn hotter and faster than those in previous times, smoke detectors are more important than ever.
Consider all possibilities when planning how to get out of your home in case of a fire. During a house fire near Morgantown the mother escaped out the back door. The two sons escaped by going out windows. The father died when he tried to go out the front door which he always used. Don’t let habit decide whether you live or die.
Remember, do not go back into a burning house. Talk to your family about where to meet outside so you know everyone is safe. Pick a place that is away from areas that smoke might reach. A home fire is always a tragedy. Don’t make the outcome worse by going back inside. While you may see the smoke that can kill, you won’t see the deadly gases that end your life.
