Davis and Elkins President Responds to Decision by Nine Schools to Withdraw from WVIAC

The Gilmer Free Press

Davis and Elkins College President Buck Smith says the way the six remaining schools in the West Virginia Conference were notified by nine other schools Monday that they were leaving the conference was ‘bush league.“

Smith says the remaining schools, including D&E, found out at the same time the development was released to the media.

“You would think the participants in the conference would have some advance notice about it,“ Smith said. “If this is the way those schools want to operate—that’s just fine. Some of us that have a little greater sense of civility and integrity will operate in a quality standard that we’re accustomed to.“

Shepherd, Fairmont State, Concord, West Liberty, Seton Hill, West Virginia Wesleyan, University of Charleston, West Virginia State and Glenville will form the new conference. It appears D&E, Bluefield State, Wheeling Jesuit, Alderson-Broaddus, Pitt-Johnstown and Ohio Valley are left to fend for themselves.

President Smith says there’s been a difference of opinion for a while between the public and private schools of the conference on how to proceed but they’ve always managed to resolve their disagreements. He says there is obviously a deeper divide. Smith stopped short of calling it a money-grab by the nine schools that are withdrawing from the conference to form their own regional all-sports league.

“I’ll leave it to your imagination as to what this really is—a chasing after the dollar, I’ll not comment on that. But I can also tell you that’s a no man’s land for a college that is serious about education,“ the president said.

President Smith says there have been discussions in recent months among conference members about what a broader geographic base might do for TV attention and postseason possibilities. He says Davis and Elkins is not interested in putting athletics over academics.

“If a school wants to flip this around and have what would be the number three objective for us, namely a competitive athletic program as their number one objective, that’s their business and good luck to them,“ Smith said.

There are no sour grapes about the developments according to president. He says D&E will chart its own course and academics will lead the way.

“We frankly see our student athletes as primarily students and second of all as athletes,“ he said. “Our student athletes have a higher GPA than the overall student body.“

President Smith did go on to say that a president of one of the nine schools withdrawing from the conference was also surprised with the release of the information Monday. Smith says West Liberty President Robin Capehart and West Liberty’s Vice President of Broadcasting Reid Amos made the announcement “before the ink was put on the paper, let alone dry.“

Nine Schools Breaking Away Leaves One of the Country’s Oldest Sports Leagues with Just Six Teams

The Gilmer Free Press

The run of one of the nation’s oldest collegiate conferences could be coming to an end.

“It could be,“ WVIAC Commissioner Barry Blizzard said Monday when asked if the departure of nine current members would spell the end of the conference.

The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) was formed in 1924.

It once included both WVU and Marshall.

There are currently 16 active members of the league.

Nine of those schools have announced intentions to leave in order to form a new all-sports conference starting in the fall of 2013.

Six (6) schools would remain:

•  Alderson-Broaddus College

•  Bluefield State College

•  Davis & Elkins College

•  Ohio Valley University

•  Wheeling Jesuit University

•  University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown

“You have to have at least 8 active institutions under current NCAA regulations to be an active Division-II conference,“ Blizzard said.  “That number will go to 10 in a very short time.

“Some schools must be added immediately If the WVIAC is to survive.  I don’t know where they would come from.

“The future of this league is very much in jeopardy,“ Blizzard said.

If the WVIAC dissolves, one of the longest running basketball tournaments in the country would come to an end.

The WVIAC post season basketball championship tournament has run continuously since 1936.  It predates both the NCAA Tournament (1939) and the NIT (1938.)

One of the reasons for the divide among current members of the conference is differing viewpoints on expansion.

“We have looked at different schools ever since we tore down the wall around West Virginia in bringing in Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown,“ Blizzard said.  “I am not real sure there are a lot of possibilities.

“The landscape in the East right now is pretty tight in terms of places to look,“ Blizzard said.  “If we were out West we would have plenty of options.“

The schools forming a new conference are:

•  University of Charleston

•  Concord University

•  Fairmont State University

•  Glenville State College

•  Seton Hill University

•  Shepherd University

•  West Liberty University

•  West Virginia State University

•  West Virginia Wesleyan College

WVSSAC Adopts Concussion, Heat Guidelines

The Gilmer Free Press

The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission’s Board of Directors has adopted guidelines on concussions and heat-related illnesses in athletics.

One of the guidelines adopted this week would require head coaches to view a 30-minute video on concussions.

The video was distributed by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

It addresses the symptoms and signs of concussions and an athlete’s return to play or practice.

The WVSSAC says head coaches in all sports will be required to view the video before their first scrimmage.

The board also adopted guidelines to help coaches and administrators recognize the dangers of heat and humidity.

The WVSSAC says the National Federation hopes to complete a video concerning heat dangers by early August.

Court Ruling Strikes Down WVSSAC Rule

image

Public and private schools should be treated equally.

That was the reasoning behind Mon County Circuit Court Judge Russell Clawges ruling striking down a WVSSAC transfer rule that required students transferring from public to private schools to sit out a year of athletics while transfers to public schools could play immediately.

Robert Konchesky challenged the rule when his daughter was declared ineligible after transferring from University High School to Trinity Christian School.

Clawges told the WVSSAC it had two options, it could rule all transfer students ineligible for grant temporary eligibility to Konchesky’s daughter.

Clawges did not set a date for when the WVSSAC must make a decision.

G-LtE™: We the People Have the Power If We Have the Will

In the Gilmer County High School pedophilia scandal and cases involving teachers and coaches, many wonder how the perpetrators get away with the crimes for so long and how the sexual assaults on children have been ignored by the principal for years.

Reportedly, teachers have seen the assaults but looked the other way. None of the other students would go to any victim’s aid fearing retaliations from the principal or assistant principal.

The administration has kept everyone defenseless and quiet, allowing some teachers and coaches to prey on the students unchecked.

No one reports the abuse, mostly because they fear the principal and the corruption in law enforcement and the legal system in Gilmer County, WV.

Obviously, it is hard to know what to do, and for students it always seemed easier to let it go.

It has happened repeatedly, whether they are teachers, coaches or Gilmer County Schools officials.

Most of us have had that teacher at one point in our youth who made a significant impact on our lives. The person who instilled something no other teacher could, whether they forced us to use our brains in ways we never imagined or simply became our friends; we will never forget them.
But then there is the teacher, coach who makes a mark in a different way, a teacher or coach so wonderful that students love attending his/her class/team just so they could daydream about his/her embarking on a journey down statutory rape lane with them.

The sad part is good people — because of friendships — become paralyzed by inaction, giving wrongdoers an open playground.

The crimes only get worse if not stopped.

But who is going to stop them?

The Sheriff who is part of the crime?

The prosecutor who doesn’t take time to properly research a case?

The principal who thinks all of these behaviors are normal?

The Superintendent who cannot make a decent decision on his own?

The State Police who are controlled by the elite?

The politicians who caused the school system takeover for the wrong reasons?

The state board of education who gave in to politicians and the elite?

The corruption is deep, but we the people have the power to end the madness if we have the will.
