Can we be certain that the children at Sand Fork are NOT drinking and washing their hands in the bad water?
By the way—-
What is the status/outcome of Superintendent Blankenship standing in defiance of the Health Department Order to close the Sand Fork School in April when there was not water, and the unsanitary conditions that resulted?
Has there been any testing of students and staff to determine if any hepatitis or other disease issues have resulted in the defiance of Health Department Order?

By GC citizen  on  05.17.2013

It is the job of the Principal to make sure the drinking fountains are covered, water to the sinks turned off while providing hand-sanitizer and drinking water plus make sure any water used for meals or dishes has been boiled.  Did they do it? Last time someone was too busy looking down their nose with a do what I want attitude. Last time they had no water at all.

By Reason for Concern  on  05.17.2013

The boil advisory was lifted on Friday. Today, Sunday in Stouts Mills Area the water is brown and muddy! Is it safe to drink it? Should the advisory have been lifted so soon?

Anglers and Boaters Asked to Help Protect West Virginia Waters

The Gilmer Free Press

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is asking anglers and boaters to help prevent the movement of Asian Carp and other invasive species into West Virginia waters, according to WVDNR Director Frank Jezioro.

Aquatic invasive species pose threats to important recreational species, recreational fishing and boating, and ultimately, the economic benefits these activities provide.

In West Virginia, the economic impact of fishing alone represents more than $600 million to the state’s economy creating more than 7,000 jobs statewide.

“To prevent the movement and invasion of Asian carp and other aquatic invasive species, we are asking anglers and boaters not to transfer any live fish or water between water bodies,” said Chris O’Bara, DNR fisheries biologist. “We also ask them to properly clean and maintain all boats, live wells, and tackle after each boating or fishing trip.”

Anglers are asked not to release unused bait into any water body at the end of a fishing trip.  Bait that was collected from the water that they were fishing may be released back into that same water. Properly disposing of unused bait in the trash minimizes the movement of aquatic invasive species. These measures are especially important in the Ohio River where some species of Asian carp have been collected by Wildlife Resources Section biologists.

A second way to help prevent the spread of Asian carp and other aquatic invasive species is to learn about these organisms and how to distinguish these unwanted species from the state’s native species.

Anglers and all outdoor enthusiasts can learn more about aquatic invasive species at wvdnr.gov/Fishing/Invasive_Species.shtm.

Anglers and boaters also can provide information on potential sightings of Asian carp and other aquatic invasive species at the website.

Importance of Accurate Credit Reports

The Gilmer Free Press

Senator Jay Rockefeller, chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, today urged West Virginians to monitor their credit reports and pledged to hold credit reporting agencies accountable for errors.

Rockefeller’s prepared remarks came at a Commerce Committee hearing entitled “Credit Reports:  What Accuracy and Errors Mean for Consumers.”

“I’ve heard from West Virginians who are stuck between a rock and a hard place, with inaccurate credit reports preventing them from buying a home, a car they need to get to work or even from getting a job,” Rockefeller said. “Credit reports have real implications for real people, which is why credit bureaus have a responsibility to make sure the information they provide is accurate. If not, then consumers need to have an easy way to get erroneous reports fixed. I expect this industry to do everything it can to ensure that the system works and is fair.”

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide credit reporting companies — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — to provide consumers with a free copy of their credit report once every 12 months. The FCRA promotes the accuracy and privacy of information in the files of the nation’s credit reporting companies. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency which falls under the Commerce Committee’s oversight, enforces the FCRA with respect to credit reporting companies.

West Virginians can obtain a free credit report by visiting the website consumer.ftc.gov, or by visiting the following L I N K.

Tips for Dealing with Pothole Season

The Gilmer Free Press

Winter seems to have left and potholes have been left in its wake.

Potholes form when moisture collects in small holes and cracks in the road surface. As temperatures rise and fall, the moisture expands and contracts due to freezing and thawing. This breaks up the pavement and, combined with the weight of passing cars, eventually results in a pothole.

AAA offers the following advice for coping with pothole season:

INSPECT TIRES: The tire is the most important cushion between a car and a pothole. Make sure tires have enough tread and are properly inflated. To check the tread depth, insert a quarter into the tread groove with Washington’s head upside down. The tread should cover part of Washington’s head. If it doesn’t, then it’s time to start shopping for new tires. When checking tire pressures, ensure they are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended levels, which can be found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker on the driver’s door jamb. Do not use the pressure levels stamped on the sidewall of the tire.

INSPECT SUSPENSION: Make certain struts and shock absorbers are in good condition. Changes in vehicle handling, excessive vibration or uneven tire wear can indicate bad shocks or struts. Have the suspension inspected by a certified technician if you suspect problems.

LOOK AHEAD: Make a point of checking the road ahead for potholes. An alert driver may have time to avoid potholes, so it’s important to stay focused on the road and not any distractions inside or outside the vehicle. Before swerving to avoid a pothole, check surrounding traffic to ensure this will not cause a collision or endanger nearby pedestrians or cyclists.

SLOW DOWN: If a pothole cannot be avoided, reduce speed safely being sure to check the rear-view mirror before any abrupt braking. Hitting a pothole at higher speeds greatly increases the chance of damage to tires, wheels and suspension components.

BEWARE OF PUDDLES: A puddle of water can disguise a deep pothole. Use care when driving through puddles and treat them as though they may be hiding potholes.

CHECK ALIGNMENT: Hitting a pothole can knock a car’s wheels out of alignment and affect the steering. If a vehicle pulls to the left of right, have the wheel alignment checked by a qualified technician.

RECOGNIZE NOISES AND VIBRATIONS: A hard pothole impact can dislodge wheel weights, damage a tire or wheel, and bend or even break suspension components. Any new or unusual noises or vibrations that appear after hitting a pothole should be inspected immediately by a certified technician.

WV State Police Targeting Distracted Drivers

The Gilmer Free Press

The West Virginia State Police officials are kicking off an enforcement initiative to cut down on distracted driving.

Officials said Operation Chain Reaction is in full swing.

Through the initiative funded by federal grants, troopers will be on the roadways in an attempt to identify distracted drivers.

While most usually consider distracted driving as texting and using a cell phone, authorities say it also can include putting on makeup, shaving, reading a paper and eating.

Officials also said they used Highway Safety data to identified roadways in West Virginia with a high volume of alcohol related crashes.

That information is going to be used in conjunction with the enforcement effort to specifically target areas across the state.

WVDNR Advises: Leave Young Wildlife Alone

image

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources advises people to leave all young wildlife alone.  “The spring season is the time of year when the woods and fields of West Virginia are full of new life,” said Gene Thorn, wildlife biologist at the West Virginia State Wildlife Center in French Creek.  “People have a great opportunity to view and enjoy young wildlife during this season, but it is especially important for the public to understand the need to avoid touching or disturbing these wild animals.”

Attempts to rescue or rehabilitate young wildlife are often counter-productive, according to Thorn. Picking up or getting too close to wildlife greatly increases the chance of harm to the animal and/or the persons involved in this unwise practice. By touching young animals, humans leave a scent that may attract a predator. Wildlife viewing is an enjoyable and perfectly acceptable activity; however, Wildlife Resources Section personnel recommend that this pastime be conducted from a safe distance and with the aid of binoculars.

“In addition to being detrimental to the welfare of young animals, handling wildlife potentially may expose humans to various wildlife-associated diseases, parasites and other health-related risks,” said Thorn. “Rabies, roundworms and other parasites such as lice and ticks can be transmitted to humans through the improper handling of wildlife.”

DNR offices statewide receive numerous calls each year concerning young wildlife, especially fawn deer that have been picked up by well-meaning residents. In almost every case these young animals have not been abandoned. The offspring are often hidden as the adult searches for food, and this separation can last for a few hours or all day.

Humans are poor substitute parents for wild animals, because young wildlife require special diets and learn survival skills from their parents. Removing young wildlife from its natural environment almost certainly leads to the death of the animal.

Many people often mistake a bedded fawn, with no mother in sight, as abandoned, but that is usually not the case. Hiding the fawn and leaving it while the doe searches for food is an important survival tactic. The spotted pattern and coloration of fawns and their lack of scent afford protection to these young animals and make them difficult for predators to detect.

If a predator happens to approach close to a fawn, the young deer will normally hold very still until the threat passes. If discovered by a predator, the fawn will wait until the very last moment before fleeing to safety. The doe will come back to check on her fawn at feeding time. As a final caution, remember that state laws and regulations prohibit the possession of wildlife without a permit. Under any circumstances, when you pick up a young animal in the wild, you have taken it into your possession. The fines for illegal possession of a fawn deer, black bear cub, baby raccoon, squirrel or any other species taken or possessed during the closed season range from $20 up to a maximum of $1,000 and/or up to 100 days in jail.

“We want everyone to enjoy wildlife in West Virginia,” said Thorn.  “For your own health and safety and to protect the state’s wildlife, remember these wild animals should be left alone and allowed to stay wild.”

U.S. to Revise Cigarette Warning Labels

The Gilmer Free Press

The U.S. government will not appeal a court decision blocking it from requiring tobacco companies to put large graphic health warnings on cigarette packages.

In a letter obtained by The Associated Press, Attorney General Eric Holder says the Food and Drug Administration will go back to the drawing board and propose new labels.

The government had until Monday to ask for a U.S. Supreme Court review.

A judge ruled last year that the requirement violated First Amendment free speech protections. An appeals court upheld that ruling.

Some of the largest tobacco companies sued to block the mandate to include warnings depicting the dangers of smoking and encouraging smokers to quit.

They argued the warnings amounted to anti-smoking advocacy. The government argued the photos of dead and diseased smokers were factual.

WV Department of Agriculture Warns Horse Owners about Herpes Virus

The Gilmer Free Press

Agriculture Commissioner Walt Helmick is urging West Virginia horse owners to step up their biosecurity practices after recent outbreaks of equine herpes in other states.

The infections can cause respiratory disease, abortions, neonatal deaths and neurological diseases.

Cases have been diagnosed recently in California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Tennessee and Utah.

State Veterinarian Jewell Plumley says biosecurity plans should prevent the transmission of infectious agents by minimizing contact among animals.

Horse owners should consider such things as facility layout, feeding and watering procedures, decontamination protocols and immunizations.

Plumley says the Animal Health Division staff has elevated its regulatory surveillance at events throughout the state.

Exhibitors can help by having health documents up-to-date and accessible.

WV Spring Forest Fire Season Starts Friday, March 01, 2013

image

As spring approaches, so does the threat of forest fires. The West Virginia Division of Forestry reminds residents that the state’s spring forest fire season starts on March 01, 2013, and runs through May 31, 2013. During these three months, daytime burning is prohibited from the hours of 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Outdoor burning is permitted only between the hours of 5:00 PM and 7:00 AM.

State law requires a ring or safety strip around outdoor fires to keep the fire from spreading into the woods. This safety strip must be cleared of all burnable material and be at least 10 feet wide completely around the debris pile.

Additional requirements of the state’s fire laws include staying on-site until the fire is completely extinguished, and only burning vegetative materials like leaves, brush and yard clippings.

If you allow a fire you have started to escape and it causes a wildfire or forest fire, you will be subject to fines ranging from $100 to $1,000. An additional civil penalty of $200 also will be assessed against you.

The Division of Forestry offers these tips for safe outdoor burning:

•  Burn only after 5:00 PM — it’s the law — and put your fire out completely by 7:00 AM.

•  Put debris in several small piles instead of one large one

•  Never burn on dry, windy days

•  Select a safe place away from overhead power lines, phone lines or other obstructions and where the fire cannot spread into the woods or weedy or brushy areas

•  Clear at least a 10-foot area around the fire and make sure the area is clear of all burnable material

•  Have water and tools on hand to extinguish anything that may escape the burn area

•  Be conscientious of neighbors and don’t burn debris that produces a lot of smoke at times when smoke does not rise. If the smoke spreads out near the ground instead of rising, put out the fire and burn another time.

•  Stay with the fire at all times until it is completely out. Leaving a fire unattended for any length of time is illegal.

•  Call 911 immediately if a fire does escape

Commercial burning permits may be obtained by public utilities and people burning in conjunction with commercial, manufacturing, mining or like activities.

These burning permits cost $125 each and are issued by local Division of Forestry offices.

A permit is required for each site where this type of burning takes place.
