Newest Marthas and Marys Project - Book Drive for Gilmer County Kids - Deadline Tomorrow

The Gilmer Free Press

Help our Gilmer County kids succeed by giving them books.  Children need good food for their bodies to grow and good books for their brains to grow.  They must have the stimulation of reading.  Children who are not comprehending what they read in the third grade will continue to fall behind in all learning if they are not helped.  Our teachers are not the only people responsible for their learning.  We must encourage our children to read and make sure that they have their own books at home.  We also must be good models for them by letting them see us enjoy reading.

Marthas and Marys and area churches are sponsoring this effort to help our children learn. This week you will see large plastic bins in several Gilmer County public places where you can donate books to our Gilmer County children. Books may be new or gently used which means they have a front and back cover and no missing or torn pages, and are clean.  No damp or musty books please. The goal is to allow all 934 Gilmer County students from pre-school through grade 12 to choose a book to take home.  Your help is needed to accomplish that goal.

Books may be nursery rhymes, story books, short stories, biographies, poetry, novels, plays, how-to books, and books of general information.  Subject matter could be about every-day people today, nature, science, sports, other countries, periods in history, pets, architecture, heroes, how people live,  travel, music, arts, crafts, repairs and how-to, technology, machines and inventions, cars, trucks, and motorcycles, bicycles, cook books, and the list could go on and on.

You will see marked bins in the following businesses where you can help our children grow by donating books for them. Marthas and Marys appreciate the participation of:

•  Calhoun Bank, Foodland

•  Gil-Co Faith Pharmacy

•  Glenville Go-Mart

•  Glenville Public Library

•  Glenville Post Office

•  Hands of Pride Education Center

•  McDonald’s

•  United Bank

•  Watch Me Grow Child Care Development

In addition, there will be book collection bins at the following schools:

•  Gilmer County High

•  Glenville Elementary

•  Normantown Elementary

•  Sand Fork Elementary

•  Troy Elementary

All churches who participate in the ecumenical work of Marthas and Marys will also have book collection bins.  Our children are waiting for your donations.

Collection bins will be in place through Tuesday, April 30, 2013.

Annual GSC Blue vs. White 2013 Spring Game - Tonight

For the third year in a row the Glenville State College Pioneer Football team is partnering with the Gilmer County Volunteer Fire Department (GCVFD) for the Annual Spring Blue vs. White Football Game which will be played Thursday, April 25 at 6:00 PM at I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium. The game will feature the 2013 GSC Pioneer Offense against the GSC Defense.

The Gilmer Free Press

“The Gilmer County Volunteer Fire Department provides vital services to our community through the efforts of volunteers. These members regularly risk their lives and take time away from their families for the benefit of our community. We wanted to take this opportunity to show them our appreciation for their dedication, and to help raise some much needed funds for them, last year we raised nearly $500.00 dollars for the GCVFD and hopefully we can do better this year,” said GSC Head Football Coach David Hutchison.

The spring game is free to the public, but the Glenville State College Football team will be collecting donations at the game that will benefit the Gilmer County Volunteer Fire Department.

Also the month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and during the Spring Game the GSC Pioneers football team will be showing support. The players will be wearing teal wrist bands to show their support. Also there will be an event under the shelter called the “clothesline project.” T-shirts will be hung up that have messages painted on them by survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Students are encouraged to come paint t-shirts with their own massage to support victims of those crimes.

The spring game represents the culmination of spring practice. The Pioneers return 7 starters on offense and 7 on defense from last year’s squad. In 2013 the Pioneers look to improve on the 5-6 mark of a year ago.

The Pioneers will open preseason camp on Thursday, August 08, 2013 in preparation for the 2013 season. GSC opens the 2013 season on Saturday, September 07, 2013 when they travel to Virginia Military Institution. Their first home contest of the 2013 season will be on Thursday, September 19, 2013 against rival Fairmont State.

Anyone who cannot attend the spring game but would like to donate to the GCVFD may contact Coach Hutchison at or 304.462.6230.

Mountaineer Food Bank Seeks Clicks to Help Fight Hunger

The Gilmer Free Press

Mountaineer Food Bank is hoping the public can help them click their way to a grant from Walmart by voting for them in the “Fighting Hunger Together” initiative - a national campaign where money is awarded to programs that get the most votes for their innovative and effective programs that help alleviate child hunger.

The public will decide what organization will receive the grants through a voting campaign at www.facebook.com/walmart that includes more than 300 different hunger relief organizations from across the country. The more votes a Feeding America food bank or partner agency gets, the better chances they have of winning the money. The funds won will then be used to support local child hunger relief programs.

The public will be able to vote on their food banks from April 01 through 11:59 PM ET on April 30, 2013 at www.facebook.com/walmart. Descriptions of programs from across the country that are dedicated to reducing child hunger in their communities will be posted on the voting site along with a “vote” button. Visitors to the page can award one “vote” a day to their favorite program. At the conclusion of the voting, top vote getters will split $3 million in funding from Walmart.

If awarded funds through this project, Mountaineer Food Bank would use them to purchase and supply food to up to 10 Back Pack programs sites in West Virginia specifically Kanawha, Harrison and Berkeley counties. Back Pack programs provide food to elementary age children for weekends and extended school breaks, often when food is unavailable. The funds would be able to purchase enough food to supply each site for an entire school year and help thousands of young children escape hunger. Here in West Virginia, there are an estimated 80,000 children who struggle with hunger.

For more information and to vote for Mountaineer Food Bank, please go to: apps.facebook.com/walmartlocal/?applet=hunger&organization=33&agency or visit www.mountaineerfoodbank.org.
