Reconnecting McDowell Works toward September Roll-out

Organizers of a five-year venture aimed at rescuing impoverished McDowell County and its troubled schools are expected to have an overall plan ready to launch next month.
Gayle Manchin, vice president of the state school board and former first lady, said Wednesday that six committees have worked on their parts of the plan.
She says those include areas such as housing, transportation, kindergarten through 12th grade, technology, early childhood, and “wraparound” services such as health, mental health services, after-school programs, tutoring and counseling.
Reconnecting McDowell is a public-private venture led by the American Federation of Teachers.
Manchin says the goal is to roll out both short- and long-term phases of the project in September.
