GSC Adds Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art
The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission has granted Glenville State College permission to offer a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art beginning with the Fall 2012 semester.
“This enhancement of programs in the fine arts is another indication of the college’s commitment to providing a liberal arts education of the highest quality,” said Dr. John Peek, GSC Provost and Senior Vice President.
This new baccalaureate degree will allow students to select emphases in Digital Media and Studio Art.
“During my five years at GSC, many students in my art classes expressed a desire to major in art. This major will open new opportunities for future and current students. There are five or six of my existing students who will be changing their major to art or adding it as a second major. I am excited to see how the program grows in the coming years,” said GSC Assistant Professor of Art Liza Brenner.

The GSC Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art with an emphasis in Studio Art provides an excellent grounding for professions as diverse as law, medicine, and business. Completion of this emphasis will prepare students for advanced study in art history, architecture, and cultural studies. It also serves as the foundation for careers related to teaching, arts administration, museum curator, gallery work, historic preservation, art libraries, publishing, journalism, advertising, art conservation, and art investment.
The emphasis in Digital Media will prepare students to become content creators in a world that is constantly being shaped by technology. This preparation includes the cultivation of analytic and critical thinking skills as well as the ability to work and communicate with others on complex interdisciplinary projects integrating digital music, digital art, web-based technologies, and computer programming skills.
“As a former Professor of Art, I am thrilled that the art major is being offered.
Programs such as this help create a positive liberal arts atmosphere on our campus.
It is certainly a great addition to the outstanding programs of study that we offer to students at Glenville State College,” said Duane Chapman, GSC Vice President for Enrollment Management.
