NATIONAL and Local FEEDER & STOCKER CATTLE SUMMARY - WEEK ENDING 08.03.2012

RECEIPTS: Auctions Direct Video/Internet Total This Week 126,200 65,800 206,800 398,800 Last Week 119,400 70,500 96,200 286,100 Last Year 158,700 48,300 249,300 456,300
Compared to last week, yearlings traded 1.00-4.00 higher with calves in the Southeast selling 3.00-6.00 higher as other areas traded unevenly steady in a light test.
This week feeder cattle prices found long lost support as cattle buyers got back into action, but clearly much depends on the weather and how the corn market continues to react.
Live cattle prices moved significantly higher on Thursday as short bought packers were aggressive to buy cattle and feedlots were quick to react in active trade.
Live sales were 3.00-5.00 higher trading from 118.00-119.00 and dressed sales 4.00-6.00 higher ranging from 184.00-186.00.
With the continuing drought which has forced feeder cattle off pastures and back-grounding operations into feedlots over the last couple of months has brought on a steady decline in feeder prices and kept cattle markets on the defensive near term.
This first week of August was the first time since the first week of June that the National Feeder Cattle Summary has been predominately higher.
A large crowd of buyers were on hand in Valentine, NE on Thursday as a number of large strings of reputation Sandhills cattle were sold.
Buyers readily bid on yearlings as near 265 head of 700-750 lb. steers had a weighted average price of 154.30; near 400 head of steers weighing 800-850 lbs. had a weighted average price of 141.61 and near 550 head of steers weighing between 850-900 lbs. had a weighted average price of 137.02.
The pressure cooker that’s more commonly called the Midwest saw another round of high temperatures this week.
Corn prices this week saw a pull-back aiding feeder cattle prices.
Lower corn prices this week came from profit taking and slow export sales as soaring corn prices have crimped demand. Grain traders are taking a wait and see approach this week trying to find clues as to the actual size of the corn crop with USDA releasing its Supply and Demand Report next week.
This week’s weekly Crop Progress report was more of the same with really nothing good to say as deteriorating corn and soybean conditions continue.
USDA had 48% of the corn crop rated poor to very poor compared to 45% last week and 14% last year.
Soybeans were rated 37% poor to very poor compared to 35% last week and 12% last year.
The shrinking beef cow herd and calf crop are an item that is on the minds of many in the cattle industry.
At some point once this drought subsides tight supplies should push prices higher.
But beef demand will be the mover on the domestic front as well on the international stage that will be the key to cattle prices moving forward.
This week reported auctions included 57% weighing over 600 lbs. and 39% heifers.
