Legislative Update – by – Delegate Brent Boggs - House Majority Leader - 09.03.12

While Labor Day weekend may be considered a holiday weekend, I spent most of it like many Americans.  Working.  The railroad rarely curtails operations and last weekend was no exception.  However, I was able to attend a great event at Sand Fork last Friday evening to dedicate the veterans’ memorial on the grounds of the municipal building.  A great crowd of folks of all ages came out to honor our veterans with the evening topped off by an impressive fireworks display for the entire town and visitors to enjoy.  I want to thank Mayor Tomblin, the council members and everyone that attended for a very special evening.

Likewise, Jean and I hoped to spend Saturday evening at the Cedarville community festival, but work kept us from attending.  I can’t tell you how proud I am of both these great communities and their residents for keeping the community spirit alive and well.  Little Birch, Flatwoods, Frametown, Rosedale, along with Sutton, Gassaway, Burnsville and Glenville work diligently each year to provide fun and entertainment for central West Virginia residents.  I am pleased that funding from the Legislature helps make these annual events possible, including the major funding for the Braxton County Fair and Gilmer County Farm Show.

Interim meetings are set for September 10 -12 at the Capital.  The full schedule is as follows:

Finally this week, In the August 16, 2012 Glenville Democrat Pathfinder editorial, it was stated that I was working on a House bill to change the current law to create an inter-county governance board for the newly proposed school at Linn that will be comprised of students from Gilmer and Lewis Counties.  While I have been approached regarding this issue, I have not committed to proposing legislation to create this governing board.

The decision to create this inter-county school has been made by the county and state board of education; it was not made by the Legislature.  Therefore, I want to ensure that Gilmer County parents, students and other residents have an equal say in how the school is governed.  I want to hear from Gilmer County residents regarding their thoughts on this issue before I move forward or commit to proposing legislation to make any changes.  I welcome any thoughts and suggestions on the structure of the governing board for this new school.
