The bridge was never part of a turnpike. The Gilmer & Ripley Turnpike passed through current River Street to a ford in Brooklyn that crossed near Walnut Street. After crossing the Little Kanwaha River it intersected the Gilmer & Ritchie Turnpike. This is from a plat dated Feb. 5, 1865 showing the turnpikes which is TWENTY years before the old bridge was built.

The turnpikes existed before the bridge.

Why would the State take responsibility for the old truss bridge built in 1895 when they had just built a new bridge in 1929?

The county commission had it built. They had it renovated in 1980. They own it.

I cannot believe the shear close-minded, dried up old prunishness of the comments on something people really know nothing about.  I was at the meeting and had asked questions before I went because of phone calls Gary was getting. I understood the class and what it was about before the meeting started. The comment about Gary in the class to get help?  Come on people, Gary & I have been married 31 years and he wasn’t IN the class in the first place.  He is on the board and went to Jenny for answers when everything blew up as everyone else should have done, rather than spread gossip and rumor. I want to stress that the books would never even be seen by a young 4-H member as it was for adults.  Also if you think something is wrong with good sex in a marriage, I really feel sorry for you! The class was to help form healthy relationships and families. Furthermore, there was a question on where the funding came from and that has been resolved. Lastly it was NOT school levy money that paid for the books.  So check the facts before jumping to conclusions and running your mouth to others. What is wrong with people that when SEX is mentioned, they jump to all the wrong conclusions?!  Did anyone mention that the Love series is named for one of the PHds that wrote the series? His LAST NAME is LOVE! If you think people don’t need relationship training, look at the divorce rate and what it’s doing to people and children today.  I only read this article today because Gary mentioned what was said about him. As you can tell, I take offense to what has been said and hope that people will just let the whole thing drop now that they have discontinued a class that could have made a difference with the young adult people in our community. How do you know the book selections were filthy?  Did you read them? Who says Jenny said that sex is the only reason for divorce? DID YOU LOOK AT THE MATERIAL?? Again, check things out before jumping to narrow minded conclusions.

I just read the comment by Mrs. Starkey.
Her investigator Mr. John Bennett did a lousy job investigating.
As Mr. Bennett has stated here, he went to the person who commit the crime and asked if she was guilty!! What did he expect a criminal response be? Surely not a YES?
Surely Mr. Bennett should be smarter than this.
He did not pursue to find out and check the invoices. Even Chapman said the funds were used and supposedly they are paying for them some other way.
Also, Mr. Bennett did not vote against the class at the Board of Directors meeting.

Finally when people who want public jobs and get paid for by people’s money, MUST be responsible for their action.

In reference to misuse of Levy Funds
Approximately, three weeks ago, I was notified by a Gilmer County Citizens that School Levy funds might have been used to pay for questionable invoices. These invoices were supposedly used for purchase of textbooks for the 4-H Director to teach a class at GSC on Love.
Information and pictures received on this issue were presented to Board member Larry Butcher and Superintendent John Bennett before the February 8, 2010 Board of Education meeting. I requested that these gentlemen investigate the 4-H allegations, so this issue could be placed on the Board’s agenda for action, if necessary.
Both Mr. Butcher and Mr. Bennett are members of the 4-H Extension Board and are in position to investigate any allegations pertaining to 4-H or School Funds. School Levy Funds CANNOT be used for anything that does not enhance programs for 4-H children.
I was informed that Superintendent Bennett did not find any misuse of funds during his investigations. The Director’s textbooks were not paid for with Levy Funds. The public should free to contact the County Commission and School Board to check any accounts that are paid for by tax payers’ monies.
Final Word: Gilmer County School Levy Funds are sent to County Commission to be disbursed to the 4-H Extension Office. This Office is by a Board of Gilmer County Citizens. I have faith that the 4-H Board will make certain that all funds be used for 4-H Children ONLY.

Gilmer county citizens, Why would the Gilmer county commission pay an invoice with out knowing what it’s for? Mr Chapman you stated that the commissioners never look at invoices and they are just approved because the department heads approval and signature is on the invoice. This is the county’s money you are spending.
I think we need a whole new board. Isn’t this enough proof to show the citizens of Gilmer county what you are doing?
Ms Shirey doesn’t pay taxes in Gilmer County. She lives in Harrison County. I guess Larry Chapman and Ms. Shirey think that it’s alright if they use tax payers money and this gives permission to spend it however they please.

The lady who is defending the class for college is correct. But where she is missing the point is the use of youth 4-H levy fund resources for this class. I know some people may think these books and porn is ok, but that does not make it fine for the majority. Again, the issue has not been whether adults need this information or not. It has been mis-use of the funds allocated for other youth 4-H uses. I guess what she is saying it is ok for ms. Shirey to buy say Hot Monogamy, even if she uses the funds from a collection in a church.

As I read through all this information, article and comments on this “Love Series” or rather “Sex Class” it really disturbs me.

I have been a 4-H’er for more years than I care to mention at this time.  I have known LOTS of extension agents - both from events that I have attended and being a 4-H member under them.  It seems like to me that the end of my 4-H career as a member is staring at me from just a few short feet away, but I really do have longer than I realize left in the program.  Being in 4-H I have spent a lot of time working with Jennifer on a lot of programs here in the county for county youth.

How am I as a young adult and 4-H member supposed to take this information?  I know very well that College students my age could very well have been taking this class..  Heck, the collegiate 4-H club members MAY have been in attendance as well!

When I think of 4-H, I think of farms, gardens, barns, camps and competitionss.  I think of kids from 9-21 participating in the program I hold dear, I think of them laughing, crying, and just having a good time.  I have never once brought “Sex” or even “Love” (in that way) into the picture when I think of 4-H.

Yes, I do believe some families need counceling - but something the whole family can participate in, not just the mom and dad.. 

Whoever posted that there is more to divorces than what what was supplied by Jenifer is correct.  The issue that isn’t even mentioned is ABUSE - Child and adult alike.  How many divorces end because the husband has beat the wife or child??  That isn’t listed!  And there is help for that.

I know leaders are doing all they can to protect kids - and I’m relieved to find this out!  But, what people are not addressing is what is the impact this is going to have on the kids that understand this article, such as us in the range of 16-21??  What overall effect will this have on the 4-H program in the future?  How many parents are going to say “no, you cannot join 4-H; they sponsor classes inappropriate for you?“  Never thought of that one, did you?!?!

I just don’t see how I can work with someone who truely thinks this program is good and who truly thinks that the Extension Service should teach a class!!  This wouldn’t make me half as sick if this class was done on Jenny’s own time and it wasn’t paid for by the county!!!  What she does or teaches on her own time is her business, not ours.  But what she does and teaches under the title of “Gilmer County Extension Agent” is OUR business!  She represents our county to the state as our extension agent!  Is this what we want our representives doing in our name??

College level classes on marriage and family life are normally taught by Sociology or Psychology professors trained in counseling.  The books have no mention of explicit directions for sexual activity and are classes that a child could sit in on comfortably.  I took such a class in college. I’m sure others have taken them, as well, and can tell you the same thing.

The WV Extension service is interested in the well being of families but has no business teaching a class with that sort of text material.  Family relationships are about trust and respect, not sex.  In counseling dysfunctional families, the children are included in the process.  College students may think marriage and family life is all about sex but what they need to learn is that strong family life is based on trust, respect and commitment.  It would do them far more good to learn how to make up a workable budget than to give them the modern version of the Kama Sutra as a text.

I sincerely hope, as Norma Hurley stated, that this does not cause people to vote against the vital services levy.  The children in Gilmer County enjoy 4-H, we need the health department and we certainly need the library.

This is a quote from the paper that explained the program from Jenny Shirey. “All of the books recommended by the program authors for further reading were being offered as door prizes for participants. The books are not part of the curriculum and are not used as part of the WVU Extension teaching materials.“

As is mentioned Larry Butcher was the one that made the motion and the person that seconded the motion was Keith Cole, President of the Gilmer county 4-H Leaders Association. The other committee members did vote against this or it would not have passed.

Luckily for residents on River Street, the “improvement” which shut off flow to the gas line carried by the Glenville truss bridge did not result in a loss of natural gas service. The county commission’s deliberate lack of attention to a bridge owned by the county since the late 1800s could have had far worse results.

Fortunately Dominion was able to continue natural gas service to River Street residents in spite of the collapse of one span of the bridge which left the pipe line dangling unsupported over the Little Kanawha River. Dominion deserves our thanks for reacting to the emergency situation.

Gilmer County needs a county commission. Instead we have the three stooges. What a joke! Unfortunately no one’s laughing. Maybe a song and dance instead of tap dancing might help.

This is a bad choice by Gilmer County Historical Society to nominate the ‘we editors’. How far did they look to find this man who is far from any type of free press?
He always rigs up the news. He is not honest. He always rips off the government entities with legal ads. He purposely run the legal ads more times and then charges them for it to be paid with taxpayers’ money. Just look at the public records to check the class of the ads. He charges clients for his mistakes in their ads. He carters only certain select elite group and not Gilmer County. He makes up stories to satisfy them. He even changes the “letters to editor”.
Instead, he should be nominated for dishonesty or better yet, Salesman. Salesman, because all he think press is to fill his paper with ads. He is not interested in free press, he just want to sell papers and ads. He claims he is publishing two papers which in reality is only one with two names? “Glenville Democrap” and “Glenville Pathfinder of Nothing.” Can you buy them both on the newsstands? No! Finally he can’t keep help in his office because the smart ones quit once they realize how crook and unethical he is. Case closed.

The problem here is, neither party has explained the real truth behind this deal. It is time the public, especially people in Gilmer County to be told about these secrect transactions Mr. Chapman and his colleagues they get themselves repeatedly into. This is just a continuing pattern of their actions in anything that goes on in this county. They forget that they are getting paid dearly for the little time they spend, by tax payer’s money. If this were not the case, this document would have been correct the first time. This is usually the outcome when these individuals who apparently think people are stupid try to get around the laws. Minnie Hamilton is just trying to again, beat the rules to get and abuse more Federal Funds. We all complain about the shape our country is in financially, but no one wants to stop their greed and abuse. Just take a look at Minnie Hamilton Financial Records in the past. It is sickening, you hear people complaining about public health care and role of government in it. The very organizations that oppose it and push for private health care do not stop to abuse the government for getting more money. This is a prime example of it here. Reveal the Truth.

There is a major flaw in this document!  The description and Plat shown and described in this lease covers nothing but the grassy area between Mineral road and the parking lot for that building.  There is no building, parking lot, sidewalk, nothing but a sign included in this lease.  It’s a good thing it’s only for $3.00 a year because all they have a lease on is grass they’ll need to mow.
I also question the validity of the Plat shown and the signer, David E. Thomas. PS #30.  That license was issued in 1969 and I’m pretty sure that gentleman is either deceased or not capable of reviewing a survey.  What I do believe is that his son is using his father’s license illegally.  There is a David E Thomas in Charleston, age 68, and I’m sure he was not issued a license at age 18.

I have so many wonderful memories of Preacher Charles! He was a loving, genuine, sincere, devoted man of God. He married Doug & I and that meant so much to me. I know it’s so hard to let him go, but know he is not suffering anymore and is finally with his Lord & Savior’s arms. We love you all!

A classic—and, yes,unforgettable—testimony to all that is good and true.  Not really an obituary but, rather, an affirmation of the noble life. And made by a 99 year-old man about four hours before he died in testimony, not to himself but to his father—can there be a greater honoring of the Commandment of Honor Thy Mother and Thy Father?
