G-LtE™: Gilmer County Will Exist Only in People’s Memories

The Gilmer Free Press

The County of Gilmer, is,  has,  and will be,  an exercise in governmental and educational experimentation by the Department of Education and State Legislature.

The enacted County Government Consolidation legislation will also be put into motion at a date to be determined.

I believe I read where one of your Commissioners recently referred to this as well.

The county population is small, leans hard to one political party, makes Gilmer County the logical choice for this experiment in consolidation.

Charleston is well aware there are few resources in your community to resist.

The takeover of Gilmer, that was motivated and facilitated by your local politics, fit exactly into the plan Charleston has worked on for some time.

Gilmer County has a few over 900 students, but over the next one to three years that number will be reduced to an approximated 500, mostly concentrated in the vicinity of Glenville.

The soon to be constructed Lewis County Elementary School will pull the student population from the East side of Gilmer.

The new Calhoun County Elementary in Arnoldsburg will absorb student population from the West of Gilmer County.

The as yet, not publicly announced inter-county Braxton County School will conclude the building consolidation process and house students from the Southern end of Gilmer.

When the School System plans are implemented and in place, the Gilmer County Courthouse as you know it, will cease to be the Gilmer County Courthouse, as Gilmer County will cease to exist as well.

Offices and functions will be divided with Lewis, Braxton and Calhoun counties.

Quite likely your wishes to have the 911 Center established, will be nixed as that does not fit the consolidation plan.

If Glenville State College wants to add it as an educational tool, it may then return.

Your county is the first step in the process of massive school and county government consolidations that are planned for West Virginia.

Do not look to have control of your school system returned until these changes have been implemented.

Gilmer County will exist only in people’s memories.
