Flashback: What Happened on August 05, ....

• 1921 Hobart Grimm was executed by hanging at the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville (Marshall County) for a murder committed in Brooke County.
• 1958 Jennings Randolph defeated former Governor Marland in the Democratic primary election to fill the United States Senate seat left vacant by the death of Matthew M. Neely and currently being held by Jack Hoblitzell. After the election, Governor Marland returned to his Charleston law practice and his wife Valerie Marland began teaching at Charleston High School.
• 1977 Striking coal miners marched in Washington, D. C.
• 1992 The West Virginia Board of Education took control of the Logan County school system and fired Logan County Board of Education Superintendent Cosma Crites following revelations more than 100 teachers were uncertified and others were teaching courses for which they were not qualified. It was the first time the state had taken over a county educational system since the enactment of the County Unit System in 1933.
