Last week, oil prices surged to 18-month highs above $87 per barrel.

This week, investors will evaluate several key economic reports that will provide the markets with an important check-in the pace and strength of the economic recovery.

The national consumer price index, new jobless claims data and information about retail sales in the US will all be released over the course of the week.

Oil prices will likely respond accordingly if the data shows a clear direction for the US economy.

Average price during the week of April 6, 2010 =  $2.877
Average price during the week of April 14, 2009 =  $2.064
