NCAA Adds Mountain East Conference As Newest Division II League
The Mountain East Conference (MEC) announced today that its application for membership has been approved by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. The MEC will officially become the 25th NCAA Division II conference on September 01, 2013 and immediately assumes active status.
“This is a very exciting time for the Mountain East Conference and our 12 charter institutions,” MEC Commissioner Reid Amos said. “Every one of our schools has great history, great tradition and now a great future as an MEC member. It has been an exhilarating experience to be a part of the formation of a group of like-minded institutions that has laid a strong foundation for a long and successful association.”
The 12 charter members of the nation’s newest NCAA Division II regional all-sports league include nine West Virginia institutions:
• Concord University
• Fairmont State University
• Glenville State College
• Shepherd University
• The University of Charleston
• West Liberty University
• West Virginia State University
• Wheeling Jesuit University
• West Virginia Wesleyan College
along with:
• Notre Dame College
• Urbana University
from Ohio and the
• University of Virginia’s College at Wise
The formal application process was extremely detailed – the final application document totaled nearly 200 pages when it was filed in December 2012 – but Amos said all that hard work proved to be a blessing in disguise.
“The NCAA Division II membership process was very valuable to us in a number of ways,” he said. “It almost served as a step-by-step guide to organizing a model NCAA Division II conference and really helped our presidents and athletic directors crystallize a strategic plan – a vision – for our collective future. I’m very grateful to our presidents and athletic directors for their great input throughout the process and I’d also like to express my appreciation for the guidance provided by Oliver and Lindemenn Consulting.”
The MEC expects to crown conference champions in 16 sports during its first season of operation:
• Men’s and Women’s Basketball
• Baseball
• Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
• Football
• Men’s and Women’s Golf
• Men’s and Women’s Soccer
• Softball
• Men’s and Women’s Tennis
• Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
• Volleyball
As a new conference, the MEC’s conference champions won’t be able to receive automatic NCAA Tournament bids during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years but the eligibility of all MEC institutions for at-large bids to NCAA championship play will be unaffected throughout the period.
“A highly-competitive conference supports the high-quality experience that we are committed to creating for every one of our student-athletes,” Amos said. “Ultimately, we expect our new affiliation will create increased opportunities for NCAA Tournament participation in every one of our 16 NCAA Championship sports.”

2012: WVIAC Men’s Cross Country Championship
The Wheeling Jesuit men’s cross country team won the 2012 WVIAC men’s cross country championship by placing five runners in the top 11.
The Cardinals finished with 33 total points. West Virginia Wesleyan (62) and Seton Hill (87) rounded out the medal stand. Concord (88) and Ohio Valley (149) completed the top five.
Alderson-Broaddus and Davis & Elkins tied for sixth (186) while West Liberty took eighth (219). Fairmont State (238), Glenville State (255) and Bluefield State (331) rounded out the field.
The Mountain Lions’ Robby Peters claimed the individual championship. On the 8k course he crossed in 27:31.86. WJU’s Stewart Jones came in second after finishing in 27:43.54. The Cardinals’ Luke Holubeck earned the bronze, crossing in 27:46.56.
The Griffins’ Jon Bogert placed fourth with a time of 28:06.56. His teammate, Justin Weaver, was fifth after finishing 28:17.89. West Virginia Wesleyan’s Lucas Greza took sixth in 28:33.71. WJU’s Joe Molek was seventh in 28:39.67. Concord’s Sterling Snyder (28:41.77), the Bobcats’ Nathan Whitacre (28:45.64) and WJU’s Patrick Stanton (28:48.65) completed the first-team all-conference performers by rounding out the top 10.

2012: WVIAC Women’s Cross Country Championship
Wheeling Jesuit edged Seton Hill for the 2012 WVIAC women’s cross country championship Saturday.
The Cardinals placed four runners in the top 10 and had five in the top 16. WJU won the title by a mere two points over Seton Hill, which tallied 42 points. The Griffins had three in the top 10 and five in the top 15. West Virginia Wesleyan notched 70 points for the bronze medal.
Concord (132) and Alderson-Broaddus (144) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Fairmont State took sixth (194) while Charleston and West Liberty tied for seventh (204). Pitt-Johnstown (233) and Ohio Valley (252) were ninth and 10th. Davis & Elkins (262) and Glenville State (381) completed the field.
Individually, SHU’s Jeannie Bujdos won the championship on the 6k-course with a time of 22:05.32. The Cardinals’ Katie Balbier placed second, finishing in 22:41.92. Ashli Knotts garnered the bronze after crossing in 23:15.46. The Mountain Lions’ Chelsea Callaway took fourth (23:15.88) while Megan Truelove of WJU placed fifth (23:18.35).
The Griffins’ Mary Janak took sixth (23:25.77) while Jennifer McFarland of WJU earned a seventh-place finish (23:37.05). The Griffins’ Leah Schott was eighth (23:44.92) while Alderson-Broaddus rookie Jenny Brewer placed ninth (23:47.30) and WJU’s Michelle Pottratz (23:48.72) rounded out the top 10.

2012: WVIAC Week 7 Men’s Cross Country Preview
Five WVIAC men’s cross country teams will hit the courses one last time prior to next week’s WVIAC Championship in Greensburg, Pa.
The five teams will compete in two Saturday meets. Bluefield State will race in the Battle of the Bluefields’ Invitational. Davis & Elkins, Fairmont State and West Liberty take part of the Gettysburg Invitational.
Three WVIAC squads are regionally ranked by the USTFCCCA this week. The Seton Hill Griffins (No. 6), the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit (No. 7) and the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan (No. 10) are all off until the conference championship.
The reigning WVIAC Runner of the Week, Concord’s Robby Peters, will be alongside his teammates as they rest in preparation for next week’s conference championship.

The Lady Cats’ Stella Sergeyev is fresh off a first-place finish at the Pitt-Greensburg Cross Country Invitational last weekend. The Battlers’ Jenny Brewer is another runner to watch at the Gettysburg Invitational as both will vie for top honors.
The USTFCCCA has Seton Hill (No. 5) and Wheeling Jesuit (No. 10) both ranked regionally.
Current WVIAC Runner of the Week Jeannie Bujdos, a three-time winner this season, and her team are off until the conference meet.

2012: WVIAC Week 6 Men’s Cross Country Preview
Six WVIAC men’s cross country teams will compete this weekend at two different meets.
Bluefield State, Concord, Davis & Elkins and Glenville State will be competing at the Concord Invitational. Wheeling Jesuit and Seton Hill will be racing at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
In the latest power rankings, the Cardinals and Griffins are one-two, respectively. Going head to head will allow each to see where they stand just two weeks prior to the WVIAC Championships.
This weekend marks the last time that the Mountain Lions, Pioneers, Cardinals and Griffins will be competing prior to the league championship. The Big Blues and Senators will be competing next week in one final tune-up.
The USTFCCCA’s regional rankings have WJU listed as the No. 5 seed while SHU and WVWC are ninth and 10th, respectively.
On Tuesday, Robby Peters of Concord picked up his fourth WVIAC Runner of the Week accolade of the 2012 campaign. He helped the Mountain Lions to a second-place finish at the Greensboro Invitational.

2012: WVIAC Week 6 Women’s Cross Country Preview
Eight WVIAC women’s cross country teams will be competing this weekend at four meets.
On Friday, the University of Charleston will be hosting its Homecoming Race.
Bluefield State, Concord, Davis & Elkins and Glenville State will all be racing at the Concord Invitational Saturday morning. Pitt-Johnstown will make the trek to Pitt-Greensburg for a race while Wheeling Jesuit and Seton Hill will participate at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
In the latest WVIAC Power Rankings, The Griffins maintained a lead over the second-place Cardinals. With the two competing at the same race, each will get to see how its own team fares against some of the best in the WVIAC.
This weekend is the last time that Concord, Glenville State, Seton Hill and Wheeling Jesuit will compete prior to the WVIAC Championships on Oct. 20 in Greensburg, Pa. The Lady Blues, Senators and Lady Cats will all race next weekend in their final preparation for the league championships.
The USTFCCCA ranks SHU fifth and WJU 10th, respectively, in the latest regional rankings.

After only a few WVIAC teams competed last weekend, 12 of the league’s 13 women’s cross country programs will be on the courses over the next few days at various meets.
On Friday, six squads head to Ky., to take part in the Greater Louisville Classic on Friday. This includes Seton Hill, which sits atop the latest WVIAC Power Rankings. Four of the top five in this week’s power rankings will be at the meet, including Wheeling Jesuit, West Virginia Wesleyan and Concord. Glenville State, Ohio Valley and West Liberty will also be competing at the meet.
Davis & Elkins hosts its second meet of the season, this one being the Parents’ Weekend Invitational.
On Saturday, Alderson-Broaddus makes the trek to Bethany, WV, to compete in the Bison Invitational. Bluefield State and Charleston will be running at the Greensboro Invitational. The Golden Eagles are led by the three-time WVIAC Runner of the Week, Debbie Amos.

2012: WVIAC Week 5 Men’s Cross Country Preview
After only a handful of WVIAC men’s cross country teams raced last week, 10 squads hit the courses this weekend.

2012: WVIAC Week 3 Men’s Cross Country Preview
Seven WVIAC men’s cross country times will compete in various meets this weekend.
Bluefield State, Concord, Davis & Elkins, Ohio Valley, Seton Hill, West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling Jesuit will all be in action.
Bluefield State and Concord will both make the short trek to Blacksburg on Friday evening for the Virginia Tech Invitational. It is the season opener for the Big Blues while the Mountain Lions last raced at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, taking third.
The Griffins will partake in the 34th annual National Catholic Invitational Friday evening while the Bobcats will take part in the Adidas Classic. SHU won the Green Terror XC Challenge last week while WVWC took home the Forest Festival title. The Bobcats are paced by WVIAC Runner of the Week Nathan Whitacre.
Ohio Valley hosts the Fighting Scots Invitational Saturday. The Senators will participate in the event. OVU raced in the Forest Festival last week, marking the first event of the 2012 season for the squad. D&E hosted the Forest Festival, taking fourth.
The Cardinals head to Kutztown, PA, to take part in the Division-II Team Challenge. It marks the first time the team has competed since September 01, when the squad hosted the Bob Creamer Memorial.

2012: WVIAC Week 3 Women’s Cross Country Preview
Nine WVIAC women’s cross country teams are slated to compete this weekend.
Bluefield State, Charleston, Concord, Davis & Elkins, Ohio Valley, Pitt-Johnstown, Seton Hill, West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling Jesuit will all race.
On Friday, Bluefield State, Charleston and Concord will all participate in the Virginia Tech Invitational. The Lady Blues will be competing in their first meet of the 2012 season. The Golden Eagles will be paced by reigning co-WVIAC Runner of the Week Debbie Amos while the Mountain Lions are coming off a strong third-place finish at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
The Griffins will participate in the 34th annual National Catholic Invitational. The squad is led by Jeannie Bujdos, who has earned at least a share of the WVIAC Runner of the Week honor each time her team has competed. The team is coming off a title at the Green Terror XC Challenge.

OVU competed last weekend at the Forest Festival, marking the first time the team hit the courses in 2012. The squad hosts the Fighting Scots Invitational.
The Lady Cats will participate at the Juniata College Invitational Saturday morning. UPJ has competed in each of the first two weekends of the season, finishing sixth at the SHU Invitational Sept. 1 and ninth at the Waynesburg College Invitational last weekend.

Six teams will compete in the Forest Festival Invitational, which is hosted by Davis & Elkins. Two will run at the Cal Broughton Invitational while one competes at the Waynesburg Invitational and another at the Green Terror Split Distance XC Challenge.
The Senators will host Charleston, Fairmont State, Glenville State, Ohio Valley and West Virginia Wesleyan. Alderson-Broaddus and West Liberty head to the Cal Broughton Invitational and Pitt-Johnstown makes the trip to the Waynesburg Invitational. Seton Hill heads to Westminster, Md., for the Green Terror Split Distance XC Challenge.
The Battlers garnered a fourth-place finish at the SHU Griffin Classic last weekend. The team was led by rookie jenny Brewer’s ninth-place effort in 21:02.63. The Golden Eagles placed third at the same meet. UC’s Debbie Amos came in second individually, crossing the line in 19:14.68.
D&E competed at the Marty Uher Invitational opening weekend, taking sixth. Second-year student-athlete Ellen Cantaral was 19th.
At the SHU Griffin Classic, the Pioneers took ninth. Danielle Perkins and Nicole Himes had solid races for GSC. The Falcons registered a fifth-place effort at the meet. Senior Laura Horning boasted a 15th-place performance while Jennifer Marie Friend was 20th.
The Fighting Scots will be competing in their first race of the 2012 campaign. The team should be led by India Bryant and Tara Carlson.
The Lady Cats will be looking to continue their strong start from a week ago. UPJ took sixth at the SHU Griffin Classic, placing three in the top 30. Leading the way was freshman Stella Sergeyev, who took 18th.
The Griffins won the title in their home meet last week, accounting for 19 points. Jeannie Bujdos smashed the course record en route to being named the WVIAC Runner of the Week. She finished in 18:58.22. Teammates Mary Janak (3rd), Meagen Carter (4th), Leah Schott (5th), Megan Cala (6th) and Brianna Presutti (10th) all earned top-10 finishes.
The Hilltoppers started the season strong at the Fisher Invitational, earning a second-place finish. Chelsea East and Lindy Stauffer were eighth and ninth, respectively. Five Hilltoppers finished in the top 20.
The Bobcats notched a second-place finish at the SHU Griffin Classic. WVWC’s Rachel Hulett and Christine Azevedo were seventh and eighth, respectively. Ashli Knotts, Makena Haney and Erica Walker were 11th, 13th and 14th.

Congratulations to Hunter Ashley for getting a 2nd place in the Discus throw. He may be a Freshman, but he can definately out throw a lot of sophmores, Juniors and seniors. Way to go Hunter. Practice always pays off. Proud of you.
