►  MEC Football: Week two Honors Announced

Malik Grove (Notre Dame), Donavan Montague (UVa-Wise) and Jujuan Linzy (West Virginia Wesleyan) have earned Mountain East Conference Player of the Week honors for their play in the second week of the season.

Grove, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, accounted for all five touchdowns to lead the Falcons to a 35-10 win over Glenville State. He was 18-for-30 for 263 yards with four touchdowns and also added nine carries for 88 yards and another score.

Montague, a junior from Altavista, Va., had a role in three turnovers in UVa-Wise’s 34-24 win over West Virginia State. He got the scoring started with a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown, and then later added a 42-yard fumble recovery. He helped seal the victory with another interception with less than five minutes left in the game.

Linzy, a freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio, provided the Bobcats with a lift on special teams in a 34-0 win over West Liberty. He opened the scoring with a 72-yard punt return for a score, and finished with four punt returns for 143 yards (35.8 yards per return). He also added one kickoff return for 19 yards in the victory.

►  Men’s Soccer: Akintunde, Tikvic Honored By MEC

West Virginia Wesleyan’s Juwon Akintunde is the Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Week, while the University of Charleston’s Armando Tikvic is the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Akintunde, a senior from London, Englad, had five goals in three games last week as the Bobcats went 2-0-1. After notching scores against Shippensburg and Urbana, Akintunde capped his week with a three-goal effort in a win Shepherd. He now has six goals on the season.

Tikvic, a freshman from Hamburg, Germany, was a member of the back line that helped UC post a pair of shutouts last week. The Golden Eagles defense allowed just 11 shots in two games with only five landing on target. Tikvic stepped forward to take a corner and assisted on a goal in a win over Tiffin.

►  Women’s Soccer: Manoa, Schumacher Earn Weekly Nod

Notre Dame College’s Alexis Manoa is the Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Week, while West Virginia Wesleyan’s Ashlee Schumacher is the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Manoa, a senior from Strongsville, Ohio, had five points in NDC’s three wins last week. She registered two assists, including one on the game-winner, in an overtime win over Urbana. She then had the decisive goal in the Falcons’ 3-1 win over Wheeling Jesuit.

Schumacher, a sophomore from Cohocton, N.Y., had three shutouts last week as the Bobcats went 3-0-0. She stopped six shots in a win over Concord, and then turned away three against Urbana. In the final game of the week, Schumacher made five saves to help preserve a 1-0 win over Shepherd. The Bobcats improved to 4-0-1 on the year and are tied atop the conference table with nine points.
