Pioneers Drop Home Contest to Urbana

The Glenville State Pioneer basketball teams two game win streak came to an end on Saturday as they fell to the Urbana University Blue Knights 63-57.

Glenville State (2-11, 1-7) turned the ball over 12 times while Urbana (3-10, 2-6) converted them into 12 points and only gave it away eight times.

Urbana came out strong in the first half as they built a nine point lead 15-6 with 11:36 to play till halftime. The Blue Knights later stretched that lead to 12 points at the 5:01 minute mark 26-14.

Glenville State then outscored Urbana 7-2 in the last five minutes as the Pioneers cut the Blue Knights lead to seven points 28-21 as we headed into halftime.

The first half of action saw two lead changes and two ties.

Glenville State started the second half on a 6-1 run as pulled within two points 29-27 at the 18:21 minute mark. However Urbana answered with a run of their own as they built another double digit lead, this time at 14 points, 46-32 with 13:36 to play.

However Glenville State would not give up as they made another late run as they cut the lead to three points 55-52 as Jon Dunmyer nailed a three-pointer with 3:42 on the clock.

GSC then later cut it to just two points 59-57 with just 24 second to play but Urbana would hit their last four free-throws as they held onto beat the Pioneers 63-57 win.

Urbana outscored GSC in the paint 20-12 but the Pioneers scored 18 second-chance points while the Blue Knights had seven.

Glenville State shot 31 percent from the floor and just 22 percent from deep while Urbana finished the night shooting 35 percent from the field and 32 percent from deep.

Urbana also had a slight edge on the boards as they out rebounded the Pioneers by two at 42-40.

Jon Dunmyer scored 20 points as he led GSC to go with six rebounds. Darhius Nunn was the only other Pioneer in double figures as he scored 14 points and had three steals.

Elisha Mayberry grabbed eight rebounds and scored seven points for GSC.

Urbana was led by Malik Jacobs as he scored a game high 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Carlas Jackson chipped in with 10 points and three assists while AJ Washington scored just two points but grabbed a game high 10 rebounds.

Glenville State (2-11, 1-7) will host non-conference foe Davis & Elkins College this Monday, January 8th at 7:30 p.m. from the Waco Center.
