GSC’s Zach Sanford Signs Pro Baseball Contract

The Free Press WV

Former Pioneer pitcher and outfielder Zach Sanford was all set to start his coaching career when he was recently hired as a graduate assistant at Rio Grande University. However, all of that changed in a moment as hard work met opportunity and Sanford signed a contract to allow him to continue his playing career at the professional ranks.

Sanford, a left-handed pitcher and outfielder from Waldorf, Maryland, was instrumental in growing the Pioneer Baseball program from its start. Now he will be competing in the Pecos Professional Baseball League playing for the Garden City Wind based in Garden City, Kansas.

“I am extremely thankful to my family, God’s Blessings, Glenville State College coaching staff, and the Garden City Wind for the opportunities presented,“ said Sanford. “I am so grateful and ready to get started.“

“We’re very proud that Zach has the opportunity to continue his baseball and academic careers. He is an extremely talented athlete and will be able to perform very well at the professional level with his change-up abilities. Rio Grande University has a strong program with an experienced coaching staff who will serve as great mentors to Zach,“ said Pioneer Head Coach Jimmy Mullins.

Sanford graduated from Glenville State College in December 2017 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Conditioning and Coaching. In the spring of 2017 he posted a 5-5 pitching record while striking out 39 batters and walking only 15 in 65 2/3 innings.

He becomes the third Pioneer, joining Ethan Szabo and Artom Rank, to sign a professional baseball contract in the short history of the program. Additionally, the program has seen many players continue on to coach at the high school and college level. Tucker Abruzzino (West Virginia State), Justin Oney (Oklahoma Wesleyan), Zach Sanford (Rio Grande University), and Daniel McCormick are all also serving in graduate assistant roles.
