Pioneers Fall Short Against Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State

The Glenville State Pioneers scored just 28 second half points as the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State came from behind to pick up an 89-83 win over GSC.

Glenville State (2-12, 1-8) had three players score in double figures with Darhius Nunn leading the way with a game high 27 points while West Virginia State (7-7, 5-4) had four players score double figures led by Robert Fomby’s 24 points.

In the first half Glenville State would take an early nine point lead at the 13:29 minute mark at 20-11 led by John Routzhan as he hit four big three-pointers. GSC then extended their lead to 13 points at the 9:50 minute mark 32-19.

Glenville State later outscored West Virginia State in the last five minutes 13-9 to take an 18 point lead at halftime 55-37. The first half saw just one tie and the Pioneers never trailed. 

The Pioneers had the hot hand in the first half as they shot 66 percent from the field and 60 percent from deep hitting 9-of-15 three-pointer while West Virginia State shot 42 percent from the floor and 30 percent from deep.

West Virginia State came out in the second half and went on a 22-10 run as they cut the Pioneers lead to five points 65-60 with 10:47 on the clock. GSC would weather the storm and however would only lead by six points 73-67 with under seven minutes to play.

However the Yellow Jackets then scored the next nine points as they took their first lead at the 4:35 minute mark 76-73 as they erased a 21 point deficit.

Glenville State then cut the Yellow Jackets lead to just one point with 1:03 to play at 84-83 but West Virginia State hit their last five free-throws down the stretch as they came from behind to defeat the Pioneers by six 89-83.

Glenville State finished the night shooting 46 percent from the field and 45 percent from deep while West Virginia State shot 41 percent from the floor and just 28 percent from behind the three-point line.

The Yellow Jackets had a big advantage on the inside as they outscored GSC in the paint 42-32 and also pulled down 14 more rebounds than the Pioneers at 48-34. West Virginia State scored 19 second-chance points while Glenville State had just five however the Pioneers bench outscored the Yellow Jackets bench 26-17.

Glenville State was led by Darhius Nunn’s 27 points. Jon Dunmyer scored 16 points while John Routzahn chipped in with 15 points as he went 5-of-8 from deep. Andrew Johnson grabbed a team high six rebounds.

West Virginia State was led by Robert Fomby as he scored 24 points with 16 of them coming from the free-throw line. Fomby also had 11 rebounds as he posted a double-double. Pat Johnson-Agwu scored 18 points and Ernest Jenkins and Isaiah Noel each chipped in with 11 points each.

Glenville State (2-12, 1-8) hits the road this Saturday, January 13th as they travel to the University of Charleston for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off with the Golden Eagles.
