John Mason Moran, Jr.

Passed away at age 74 on November 18, 2017, following a heart attack while on vacation in Mexico.

John was born in Washington, DC, the first son of parents John M. Moran and Imogene Smith Moran.

His parents returned to their native West Virginia following World War II and John was raised in Burnsville, WV, along with two brothers.

He graduated as Salutatorian and Senior Class President of Burnsville High School in 1960. After a stint at West Virginia University, John joined the US Navy where he was first introduced to computer systems and developed a life-long love for world travel.

After moving to San Jose, CA, he married his life companion Lee in July 1985. John held various engineering and marketing management positions in the Silicon Valley area for many years. He later founded a company that operated information technology communities of practice for chief information officers of various corporations.

He was a life-long learner who completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science at the University of California Berkeley, an MBA from Golden State University, and, after moving to Reno, a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno. He believed deeply in improving the quality of education and worked as a volunteer in several capacities with the Washoe County School District.

John was also Board Chairman of Entrepreneurs Assembly, a nonprofit dedicated to educating and empowering entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses. His other great passions were his wife, family, and spiritual community, Unity Center Reno; he also enjoyed golf and travel.

He is survived by wife Lee, brothers Charles and Garrett, sisters-in-law Barbara Moran and Caroline McLeod, nieces Katie Moran and MJ Moran, and nephew Andy Moran.

There will be a celebration of life in Reno on what would have been his 75th birthday, January 07, 2018.
