Trevor Noah (Sort of) Sorry for India-Pakistan Riff

As tensions continue between India and Pakistan, with both sides claiming deaths from shelling, the perspective of one outsider hasn’t been appreciated by either. Comedian Trevor Noah is now apologizing for what some are calling a “racist” and “insensitive” segment last week on The Daily Show that poked fun at a possible full-out war between the two nations, the BBC reports. In the short clip, Noah said such a conflict would prove “the most entertaining,“ as well as “the longest war of all time—another dance number!,“ a reference to Bollywood extravaganzas. He also acted out what the battlefield would look like, mimicking Bollywood-style singing.

The BBC and Indian Express round up some of the outraged tweets reacting to the segment, calling his take “cliche,“ “in bad taste,“ and “below the belt.“ Noah responded with his own tweets, first offering an apology of sorts, responding to one of his online critics: “As a comedian I use comedy to process pain and discomfort in my world but I am sorry that this hurt you and others, that’s not what I was trying to do.“ He then pointed out, however, that he found it “amazing” the hubbub about his segment seemed to get more attention than the story of what’s actually happening between the two countries. “Sometimes it seems like people are more offended by the jokes comedians make about an issue than the issue itself,“ he tweeted.
