Oktoberfest Premium Night Scheduled for October 24, 2017

The public is invited to Mollohan’s Restaurant at Glenville State College on Tuesday, October 24 from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. for GSC’s Oktoberfest Premium Night.

The menu for the dinner includes:

  • Chicken Cordon Bleu With Lemon Cheese Sauce
  • ‘Octoberfest’ Beef Stroganoff
  • Grilled Brats With Sauerkraut
  • Buttered Spaetzle
  • Soft Pretzels With Cheese Sauce

Costs for the Oktoberfest Premium Night are $14.00 for guests, $13.00 for seniors, $13.06 for GSC faculty and staff using Flex Dollars, $10.76 for GSC students using Flex Dollars, and $8.00 for children under 12.

GSC to Host 70th Chi Beta Phi National Conference - 10.28.17

Glenville State College will be hosting the 70th annual Chi Beta Phi National Conference later this month. Chi Beta Phi is an interdisciplinary scientific honorary for undergraduate students and is an affiliate society of The American Association for the Advancement of Science. The organization aims to promote interest in science and to give recognition to scholarly attainment in science.

Chi Beta Phi LogoThe conference will take place in the Glenville State College Science Hall on Saturday, October 28. The schedule includes a greeting from the GSC chapter president, committee assignments, committee meetings, a guest speaker, presentations, and concludes with an awards presentation.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Ross Conover who will be discussing sparrows in the Colorado Rockies. Conover is an Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology at Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondack Mountain wilderness in upstate New York. He is currently conducting research out of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in the Colorado Rockies on high elevation sparrows and the semi-aquatic American Dipper.

Glenville State College’s Alpha lota Chapter of Chi Beta Phi has been active since 1964. Advisors include GSC Associate Professor of Physical Science Larry Baker and Associate Professor of Mathematics Paul Peck.

Gilmer County Farm Bureau Kick Off Dinner - 10.28.17

The Gilmer County Farm Bureau Kick Off Dinner will be October 28, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at the Gilmer County Recreation Center.

Bring a dessert, everything else will be furnished. 

The Gospel Group “Spirit Lead” from Parkersburg, WV will be singing after the meal. 

Everyone is Welcome. 

You do not have to be a Farm Bureau Member to attend. 

Please consider joining us for singing and a meal.

Lewis County 4-H 5K/Clover Walk Registration Is Open - 10.28.17

Registration is under way for the fifth annual 4-H 5K and Clover Fun Run October 28, 2017 at WVU Jackson’s Mill in Weston.

“October is ‘Join 4-H Month.’ There are all kind of things (nationwide), and one of our ideas was to promote 4-H with a fun run and 5K,” Young Riders 4-H Leader and one of four coordinators Kristi Gannon said. “I’m a nurse (at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital for 20 years) and I really feel like health is important. 4-H stands for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. We pledge our health to better living, so we wanted to do some kind of fundraiser that would incorporate the health ‘H.’”

While two laps of Jackson’s Mill equates to five miles, children 9 years of age or younger can also participate in the 100-yard clover fun run to benefit the Lewis County 4-H Leaders Association.

“All the money goes toward Lewis County 4-H,” according to Gannon, who coordinates registration.

The top three men and women overall each win a spirit stick, and the top three women and men in their respective age categories win a metal. Race times are determined automatically via a timer on runners’ shoes “the size of a penny,” coordinator Erin Hawkins said.

“When you come across the finish line, it gives you the exact time down to the second,” Hawkins said.

Categories include 12 years of age-and-under, 13-18, ages 19-24, 25-30, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 year and older.

Clover Fun Run children also receive a ribbon with a medal.

Gannon’s sons, Khori, Kaleb and Kyle (students at West Virginia Wesleyan, West Virginia University and Lewis County High School respectively) have also run in the 5K. Track teams, cross country teams and other teams wanting to get in shape have also participated in the annual event.

Hawkins’ 12-year-old son Gavin also runs in the race with his father Jason, grandfather Oscar and two English mastiffs, Bruno and Barron. Hawkins’ parents, Jim and Susie Godfrey, also distribute water halfway through the race.

“We encourage all of our leaders to participate and 4-H members to run and walk,” Gannon said. “Last year was our most-attended and we had more than 100 (participants). It’s grown every year. A lot of times we get people from out-of-state that come to see Jackson’s Mill because the foliage is so pretty during the month of October.”

“(2016’s race) was beautiful weather, perfect. So we’re hoping for beautiful weather again this year,” Hawkins added. “I advocate anything health. This is a fantastic activity.”

Hawkins also collects and organizes registration forms for the annual event.

The race begins at 9:30 a.m., with registration available the day of beginning at 8:30 a.m. The clover fun run begins immediately following the 5K completion.

Hawkins said past registration bags have included coupons, a water bottle, markers and 4-H information.

Registration is $15 until October 16. It then becomes $20 per participant.

Lewis County 4-H is also planning an open house during the month of October, as well as window and flag displays and competitions along Main Avenue.

Nonprofit Leadership Workshop – November 15, 2017

It is more important than ever that nonprofit organizations are able to translate their worthy missions into lasting positive impacts for the people and communities they serve, and arguably it has never been more difficult to do so.  To help nonprofits address these challenges, the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation and Regional Affiliates (PACF) is bringing national consultant David Grant to the area to provide training for nonprofit staff and board members on Wednesday, November 15, from 9:00 a.m. – noon at the Parkersburg Country Club. The program is co-sponsored by the West Virginia Nonprofit Association (WVNPA) and Nonprofits Lead, a nonprofit capacity building program based at Marietta College.

This interactive workshop, Leadership for Nonprofit Success, will explore how effective nonprofit leaders think about organizational development; measuring success in areas that resist quantification; forming strategic partnerships, building effective boards; overcoming resistance to change; and creating cultures of reflection and learning.

“I heard David Grant speak at the West Virginia Nonprofit Association conference last year and, ever since then, I have been wanting to bring him here to share his expertise,” said Marian Clowes, PACF’s Senior Program Officer. “David’s perspective on the sector, which he re-frames as the “social profit sector,” and his methods for assessing success are impactful. I encourage nonprofit organizations from through the region to attend and to bring a team of staff and board members to get the most out of the workshop.”

David Grant served as President and CEO of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation in Morristown, New Jersey from 1998 to 2010.  Now based in Vermont, he consults with people and organizations around the world that have a social or educational mission. He is a member of the Leap Ambassadors Community, a group of over 150 people nation-wide who support nonprofit leaders in creating high-performance organizations.  His book The Social Profit Handbook: The Essential Guide to Setting Goals, Assessing Outcomes, and Achieving Success for Mission-Driven Organizations was published in March 2015.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD TIME IS HERE

Now there’s a simple way to be a life changer. Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse, ask people to prepare a shoebox that is packed with toys and school supplies for children all over the world.

The boxes are collected at area collection centers, then transported to regional centers, then to the national center in North Carolina to be shipped world-wide.

Camden Flats Baptist Church will be the area collection center for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes again this year in our area.

Last year’s shoeboxes were monumental in sharing the Gospel and making Christmas brighter for children and families all over the world.

Only God knows the impact that OCC has had in leading people to our Savior.

It is estimated that for every shoebox, seven people will be exposed to the Gospel.

Just last year the number of shoeboxes packed were: 

      -11.6 Million World wide

      -906,000 from the Great Lakes Region: West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana

      -9,400 from Parkersburg area 10 counties

      -380 boxes from Glenville

This is a great church and family project to help kids in countries world-wide to find the real meaning of Christmas.

Classrooms at school, civic, and youth organizations are participating this year as in the past.

We are in hopes to exceed last year’s numbers.

So how can your church and organization get involved?

1. Go to Operation Christmas Child - samaritanspurse.org to get details about packing boxes.

2. Set a goal for your organization of how many boxes you will pack.

3. Prepare your boxes for National Collection Week November 13-20 and bring them to Camden Flats Baptist Church, the collection center to eventually be delivered to the national center in North Carolina.

4. Contact me with your goals so we can adequately prepare shipping boxes for expected shoeboxes.

5. If possible include the $7.00

Please let me know the name of your church or organization, contact person, and the number of shoeboxes you have set as a goal.
