Glenville State College Science Fiction and Fantasy Guild: Dragonspeak - 04.23.18

The Glenville State College Science Fiction and Fantasy Guild is proud to announce the launch of its new art and literature chapbook, Dragonspeak.

The public is invited to join us in a celebration at the RFK Library on the GSC campus on Monday, April 23.

The event begins at 4:00 p.m.

Authors will read, followed by an open mic.

Free snacks and refreshments will be served. Pick up your free copy of Dragonspeak, filled with sci-fi, fantasy, and horror poetry, short stories, and artwork.

Spring Jazz Concert - April 24, 2018

Students in the Glenville State College Department of Fine Arts will hold their Spring Jazz Band Concert on Tuesday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Auditorium.

This year’s concert will serve as a tribute to some of the great American R&B and soul artists. The concert will feature selections from Artie Shaw, Henry Mancini, Maynard Ferguson, and more.

“This concert will have something musically for everyone to enjoy! From old school R&B performed by the Jazz Combo to exciting student soloists featured in the full jazz band. This performance will be sure to have something for everyone,” said GSC Assistant Professor of Music and Jazz Band Director Jason Barr.

The concert is open to the public. Admission is by donation and all proceeds from the concert will support the jazz ensembles at GSC.

Annual GSC Department of Land Resources Golf Tournament

The Free Press WV

Planning is underway for the 20th annual Glenville State College Department of Land Resources Golf Tournament to be held on Friday, April 27 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Proceeds from the event, which will take place at the Glenville Golf Club in Glenville, West Virginia, will again be used to enhance student learning within GSC’s Natural Resource Management programs.

Funds received from the golf tournament will help provide extra tools and equipment for students studying environmental science, forestry, land surveying, land management, and other natural resource management programs at GSC.

Multiple prizes are available, including two hole-in-one prizes of $10,000 cash or a Stihl Homeowner’s Package (package consists of several Stihl tools including a chainsaw, handheld blower, and a trimmer), Lowe’s gift cards valued at $50, and a closest second shot prize of a Stihl MS251 Chainsaw. The top three teams will receive cash awards and trophies including $400 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place. Prizes also will be awarded for Closest to Pin, Log Driver Champion, Longest Putt, and Longest Drive.

Participants can enter the scramble golf outing for an entry fee of $80 per person or $320 per team of four. The entry fee includes green fees, cart rental, and lunch. Organizations and individuals are also welcome to sponsor a hole, starting at $100. Sponsors will be recognized in a GSC Department of Land Resources newsletter and will have the name of the person or organization displayed during the event. Checks can be made payable to GSC Land Resources Fundraiser and sent to Glenville State College Department of Land Resources, 200 High Street, Glenville, WV 26351.

Calhoun County classes are held at the Career Center on Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30-3:30 and Wednesday from 4-6 and Gilmer County classes are at St. Marks Church on Tuesday and Thursday from 4-6.

There are also Distance Ed classes available through Arnoldsburg Elementary.

GSC Spring Open House - 04.28.18

Future Pioneers are invited to participate in the upcoming Glenville State College Spring Open House on Saturday, April 28.

Attendees should arrive at the Sue Morris Sports Complex, located at 1294 U.S. Highway 33 East in Glenville, between 8:15-9:25 a.m. Check in will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by a welcome session from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Individual academic department tours will follow from 10:45 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A full campus tour will then be held from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. The day will wrap up with a free lunch and the opportunity to watch the GSC baseball team play at 1:00 p.m.

Bluegrass music show at Normantown School Gym

The Carol Edwards Bluegrass Band will perform at the Normantown School Gym April 28, 2018 at 6:30 PM.

The band features Carol Edwards on Fiddle, Bass, and Vocals, Glen Jones on guitar and Vocals, Jerry James on Banjo, and Jack Greathouse on Guitar and Vocals.

Admission is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for in school students.

Children under 10 are free. 

Concessions will be available at 6:00 PM.

Proceeds will go to roof repairs on the Gym.

The Normantown Historical Community Center welcomes all to come and enjoy fantastic band, some great Bluegrass Music, good food and great fellowship.

This program is a part of their Mountain Music Jamboree Program.

GSC’s Alumni Day: Graduates to be Honored

The Free Press WV

Alumni and friends of Glenville State College are invited back to campus for Alumni Day on Saturday, April 28.

Several activities are planned for Saturday, culminating with the popular evening alumni awards banquet. Alumni banquet attendees may gather in the third floor pre-function area of the Mollohan Campus Community Center from 5:00-6:00 p.m. for a social hour prior to dinner in the ballroom. Activities earlier in the day will allow everyone to socialize, reminisce, and re-establish contact with their fellow Pioneers and friends.

The Alumni Center, open from 1:00-4:30 p.m., will serve as headquarters for the day’s activities and provide an opportunity for socializing. Returning alumni may take part in self-guided tours of campus throughout the day at their leisure.

The evening’s banquet spotlight will be on the Alumni Association’s guests of honor: Alumnus of the Year Dr. Monica (Null) Beane ‘96; Alumni Achievement Award recipient Thomas J. Gallagher ‘63; Community Service Award honoree William J. Frost ‘69; Alumni Service Award recipient Bob Marshall ‘66; Outstanding Teacher Award recipient Dr. Tonya (Gray) Propst ‘91; Outstanding Young Alumna Coach Kim Stephens ‘11; and Outstanding Young Alumnus John Matthew Lamb ‘05. Special recognition will be made for members of the Class of 1993 as they celebrate their 25 year reunion. In memoriam tributes will also take place at the banquet for Billy B. Burke ‘77, Professor Emeritus George D. Harper ‘70, and Lisa Michelle ‘Shelly’ (Hardman) Kraus ‘92. The Alumni Center will be open for social time following the banquet.

Commencement Ceremony is May 05, 2018 at GSC

The Free Press WV

The 144th Glenville State College Commencement Ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 05, 2018 beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the college’s Waco Center.

The GSC class of 2018 will walk across the graduation stage to receive their degrees in a variety of programs including business, education, land resources, criminal justice, science, music, and more. The grads hail from throughout West Virginia and ten other states including California, Delaware, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, and Virginia.

In recognition of an ongoing tradition at Glenville State College, alumni from the class of 1968 will be invited back to campus during commencement weekend for their fifty year reunion.

As always, graduates are permitted to bring as many guests as they like and no tickets are required. The GSC bookstore will have a satellite location open at the Waco Center with a selection of items for sale after the ceremony.
